Baby ALWAYS hungry???

Anyone else? DD is 4.5weeks and a little over 10lbs. If she is awake, she's hungry. We do both breast and bottle feeding, primarily bottle feeding formula while I am trying to pump to build my supply. I try to do every 3 hour feedings with 3oz formula or pumped milk. I had to up it to 4oz because she was SO fussy and miserable and could never make it to the next feeding. Now that we do 4oz she is better but still sometimes fusses between feedings and starts rooting for food. Unless she is sleeping, she never makes it the full 3 hours even with formula. She doesn't take a pacifier. I think when I do have her actually nurse she uses me as a human pacifier and just likes to fall asleep at the breast. I go to the pediatrician tomorrow so I will definitely be asking all this. Anyone have any experience? If she's hungry of course I will feed her. Just hate to over feed her if that's not the problem.

If she's 10 lbs I know the formula guideline is 2.5oz per lb.. which is 25 oz a day, divided by 3oz is 8 feeds... that's probably why it feels so constant.

My LO also likes to eat pretty often, but when I was still giving him breastmilk in addition to formula, I found I was giving him a lot more since breastmilk digests faster. On average, 27oz a day when he was a little over 8lbs.

I have found the best method is to let him lead.. if you see a pattern where certain times a day he likes to eat more volume, then give him a bigger bottle. My pedi says to make a bottle 1/2 oz larger than you think they will take. Also, if they aren't taking big bottles but seem really hungry then I'll cluster every 2 hours for a few hours with smaller feeds.

Hope that helps! Don't worry though, just about everything is normal as long as they are eating and growing :)
Yes yes yes. Very well said!

  • I feel like I could have written this word for word. My son will take a 4oz bottle of formula and still be hungry. Wth?? He eats like crazy, whether on the boob or a bottle. I try not to do more than one or two bottles of formula per day but I'm beginning to think that I'm just not making enough milk to keep up with his demand!

I am going exactly through what you are. Please let us know what your md says- my appt isn't until next week !!

I appreciate the advice above :)
  • I'm EBF but I swear I have a baby glued to my boob. I feel your pain.

    Yep.
  • This is something we are dealing with and LO is strictly FF. He is eating 5 oz per feeding (most times, sometimes it is 4 oz) and he just hit a month old yesterday. He is sleeping pretty long stretches at night so I am thinking he makes up for that during the day bc sometimes he can make it 3 hours but others he barely makes it 2 hours. Also at night he cluster feeds right before bed and the last 2 nights he has eaten 7 oz in the course of an hour.

DS had boob for 40 min then 3 oz of formula. 1 hour later he had another 2 oz. less than 2 hours after that he had another 40 min of BF and another 4 oz of formula. And I bet he could've had more. And no nap in this timeframe. It's going to be a long night...

This is my LO to a 'T'!! He is the same Age and weight. He eats like a beast and uses the boob as his paci. :P I try to BF as much as I can, and I also pump to help supplement his monstrous appetite but had to start supplementing a bottle 2-3X a day. He will eat 3-4 oz formula at a time. Saw the pedi today and she did not seem to think it was unusual behavior for a one month old babes at all. ;)

  • Saw the doc today as well. She says everything is completely normal and it's ok to feed them as much as they want. I was worried I was over feeding her. Also, it's normal for them to snack. DD will eat a full bottle and then want an ounce or so an hour later. I thought that was a problem, but apparently not. The doctor said it should all straighten out around 3ish months.
