Babysitting pay rate

Hello ladies... Quick question for ya. I'm doing a favor for a family friend, she needs a sitter all next week on short notice. Long story short she asked me how much I charge and I told her for 32 hours (Mon-Thurs 8:30-4:30) I'd charge $300 which equals out to a little over $9 an hour. Is this reasonable? I usually charge $12 an hour but I figured since it's so many hours Id charge less. Idk what the protocol is though when you're basically watching the kid full time if I should charge even less? I don't have kids so I'm kinda clueless here. Thanks!

  • Depending on what your credentials are, you could look at your local daycare daily rates and charge that. For example, depending on the child's ages, daycare rates where I'm at are $35/day/kid, sometimes there's a sibling discount so it might be $65/day for 2 kids. Could be totally different where you are!!!
  • $300 is steep for an in-home where I live, especially if it's only for one week.

  • I live in NJ and yeah it's one kid. I'm going to their house 20 minutes away so I'm kind of including gas in the price. She's 4 so I'll be entertaining her all day as well as preparing meals and cleaning up after her. I charge her friend (who she found me through) $15 for the first hour and $10 for subsequent hours (her offer). I just don't know what to do since it's so many hours if the game changes or not.

And $25 a day?! Wow. That only equals out to like $3 an hour. I guess daycares are cheaper cause they're watching so many kids at once?
  • I'm also CPR certified and whatnot if that matters any.
  • $300 is steep for an in-home where I live, especially if it's only for one week.

That's where I'm confused. Because $9 an hour is cheap where I'm from but then for the whole week overall it seems like a lot.
  • That is reasonable for my area. Will you have your kids with you? Be providing food?

I don't have kids, I'll be feeding her whatever is at their house.
  • So from a parenting perspective what's the difference between a daycare and a babysitter coming to you? IMO a daycare can charge less because in the same 8 hours I have they're watching a lot more kids and getting a lot more money KWIM? I have to make it worth my while but I don't wanna come at her with some insane offer and look like an ass. (Which I might've already done)
  • I would call a local daycare and see what they charge. Maybe do a flat $50 a day since it's a rate for a week.

If she doesn't message me back before the morning I'll call tomorrow.
  • @RVASC811‌ I say family friend loosely, explaining the five degrees of separation I know her by would've been overkill haha. I've actually only met her one time.

@TyrannosaurusLex‌ where are you from? That's the estimate I've always heard from moms I know because they always equate it to a second mortgage which around here is about $1500-2000 a month.

  • This said $12.50 an hour but that brings us back to paying the typical hourly rate for a larger amount of hours is a no no. It's on point for what I usually charge though for a random 2-5 hour day.
  • For temporary last minute but full time care here it's usually more than an in home. The in home gives a lower rate because they get guaranteed in come, and there is lots of competition.
It's harder to find care for a full week randomly. When ILs watched DD we paid $350 for a nanny for the week they were gone

I agree with this too. She seemed desperate since her H forgot to request leave when he was supposed to. I don't mind helping her though, the people I usually babysit for don't need me that week.
  • DS has 3 half days a week and it's $1400 a month. So about $350 a week for 12 hours. So your rate sounds great. If we could find a nanny for that many hours at that cost we would do it immediately.

Just let her know you're willing to negotiate or talk it out, you both should be comfortable with the agreement.
  • I watch a kid for a friend at my place (with my daughter).  A full day is charged different (not on a per-hour basis), and I followed that premise.  I charge her $50/day.

  • That is totally reasonable in my area (pacific NW). With a nanny, you don't have to get your kid ready and drop him off. And no pick ups! God, I wanna move to a place where nice ladies watch my child for only $25 a day! My 2 kids go to daycare 2-3x a week and I'm forking over close to $2k a month.

look at this again... you only looked at the first "tab".  There's a weekly cost too that is $250 for 20 hours a week based on NYC.

For my friend with a one year old, I charge $25 per day plus she brings all food and milk.

For non-friends, I charge $35 per day, they bring all food plus milk, and I get paid if they miss a day.

    Second children are half price.

I charge less because in my home, I am home with my own child, I can take them to Dr appointments, grocery store, etc while I run my my own errands. I can do chores during naps, I can prep dinner, all things that I can not do as a nanny.
I can also care for more than family at a time.

If I were going to their home, I am then a household employee and would expect $15 to $20 an hour.
  • I pay $225/wk for 50 hrs total for 1 kid at a NAEYC accredited center with food included, so....
  • Thanks all. We compromised and decided to have her bring her daughter to my house for $200. (I sound like jeopardy lol) Fine by me!

@cedenton‌ you would never find an in home sitter for that price in my area. 50 hour work week for $4 an hour just isn't happening. Daycares can charge that because they have so many kids at one time.

@nauticallife816‌ ah thanks! On mobile I didn't see the rest of it.
