Single Umbilical Chord Artery?

I had a doctor visit today and she explained that they looked at the last sonogram and they found that on the Umbilical chord there's only one artery when there should be 2.

My doctor assured me that there really wasn't anything to worry about. The baby is moving regularly and kicking. And they also saw her flexing her hands and feet on the sonogram which was a good sign. I'm doing some research on it and I found that it happens to 1 of every 100 babies. It's just hard not to worry about it.

Just wondering if anyone else has a similar situation.

Re: Single Umbilical Chord Artery?

  • That's good to hear! My doctor kept reassuring me that it's pretty common and everything should be fine. But it's hard to NOT worry about it, especially on my first pregnancy.

  • I don't have any first hand experience with this, but I have two co-workers who each had babies with only one artery in the umbilical cord.  Both were told by their OB's that it was fairly common, and both babies are just fine!  Good luck!
  • I just had my level II ultrasound today - and the cord only has 1 artery instead of two.  But baby had two kidneys, and everything looked perfect (at least in that sense).  So I feel its a pretty common thing for it to happen and everything turn out just fine!

I'm in the same boat! I'm 20 wks and got the same news about the two vessel umbilical chord for our baby girl. I'm 27, and this is our first pregnancy. We planned it and we have been trying to do everything "just right" and no matter how many times I hear "try not to worry" I can't help it!!! This is the biggest scariest most important thing ever!
