Won't take full bottle first feed of day

DS is 11 weeks and FF. The longest stretch He gives at night is 4.5 hours (yay) and always guzzles full 5 oz bottles like he hasn't eaten in weeks. He generally wakes at 3AM and up for the day at 7. When I try to feed him at 7, he's only been taking about half the bottle. I've tried holding off feeding but he wants to eat and then doesn't eat but 3 oz. Not too concerned but obviously I'd prefer full feedings to be during the day instead of night. Anyone else LO do this? Any suggestions? Thanks

  • Oh and another Q- do you still feed on demand? Or if baby tends to eat every 3 hours, for example, will you just feed LO every 3 hours during the day?

  • I don't know why your LO doesn't eat his full bottle during his first feed. My DS eats the most during his first feed, but every baby is different. I feed on demand still, but typically it's every 2-3 hours during the day, so I start making a bottle around the 2 hour mark because I know he will start getting hungry. I think it's best to feed on demand.

  • Yeah it's bizarre and I can't figure it out! Yes I feed on demand too but I guess DS is starting to create his own schedule.
  • I have seen suggestions before of watering down night feeds until just straight water so that baby is hungry for the first feed.  It also has the side benefit of them starting to sleep longer stretches.

The only time i have ever seen this is for older babies, and even then i was never a fan of that advice.

  • Whether it was a pediatrician - I'm not sure.  It wasn't for before they go to bed. It was for the middle-of-the-night feed that was preventing your baby from being hungry first feed of the day. I think the point was to get them eating most of their calories during the day and take full morning feeds. No less calories overall.

I wasn't trying to present it as my advice. What do I know? I'm a FTM also. But I knew I had seen it as a way to address this specific issue so thought I'd pass it along.

Thanks...yes this is probably for older babies. I'll hope and pray that DS sleeps through the night and chugs his morning bottle at some point!! :-)

I wasn't suggesting it was your advice, sorry if it came off that way! I think it's an old school thing, that giving them water will prevent them from waking up for bottles. I look at this way, sometimes I'm thirsty or hungry in the middle of the night, so I'm sure a baby or toddler can be too :)
