Strep B positive and labor

My test results came back positive for Strep B and I was told that once labor starts I need to be put on IV antibiotics. Do I go in immediately after my water breaks? Or do I wait til contractions are closer together?

Re: Strep B positive and labor

  • I think with strep b, they want you in ASAP so you get at least 4 hours of antibiotics? Your doctor can clarify.

  • Talk to your doctor. Also search Strep B in the search function on the board- we just had a long thread all about it...
  • Shouldn't that be a conversation you have with your Dr? We aren't the experts here...

  • I had Group Strep B with my first. My water broke at 4 am and my contractions came on hard and heavy pretty immediate. We called got dressed and went right in...I live about 30 mins from my hospital but with the time of day it happened we were able to get there in 25 (no traffic). They put in my IV and started the antibiotics immediately.
  • I was positive with my first pregnancy. My water didn't break at home, but we headed into the hospital after I'd been contracting consistently for about 6 hours because we wanted to be sure I'd have time to get all the antibiotics I needed before delivery.
  • With my first, I tested positive for strep. The day I went into labor, I went into the hospital to make sure my water had broken. It did and the immediately admitted me. They also hooked me up to antibiotics right away.

This isn't necessarily true. If the fluid is clear, you have no complications & you're past 37 weeks, there's no reason to rush to the hospital just because your water broke. Of course, check with your provider, but it just starts your clock once you get there.
This will vary by OB.  If my water breaks, I am to go directly to the hospital.  My doctor will deliver no later than 12 hours after your water breaks (or you start leaking fluids) due to the increased risk of infection.

  • I was strep b+ last time, I went in as soon as I was sure I was in labor, I did not know that my water had broken until after I got checked in at the hospital. They wanted me hooked up to an iv ASAP.

Yeah Mine wants baby to be delivered 24 hours after water breaks. I didn't know it varied by provider though. i thought it was just standard across the board.

  • In my childbirth class they told me that I have two hours from the time my water breaks to get to the hospital but one of the exceptions is if I am group B strep positivite, then I have to head to the hospital immediately after my water breaks.

The clock starts when your water breaks regardless of whether you go into the hospital right away or not. But I agree that you should call your provider and see what they recommend you do.

  • I also was told today I was positive for group B. I asked my dr/midwife if I had I come immediately and I was told no and to call once my contractions are 5 min apart for 1 hour. But as everyone else stated you need to ask your dr since everyone is so different!

Thanks. I figured I should go in immediately but didn't want to rush in if it wasn't necessary until later. I also heard not everyone's water breaks and that sometimes the doctor will have to do that for u. Still reading up on all the facts and being comfortable with each step. So thank u for your feedback
  • I think Aggiecyd means the clock starts with regards the doctors and how long they will wait before intervening. If you want to avoid an induction or c-section then you want to labor at home as long as possible.

But my point is they base that clock on how long your water has been broken, because of the increase in infection risk.  24 hours with ruptured membranes is 24 hours, regardless of what time you actually went to the hospital.

If you are GBS+, that clock is even more important, because the longer you have ruptured membranes with GBS+ status, the higher risk your baby is at for infection--especially if you aren't getting antibiotics, which you won't be while you stay home.

Just found out yesterday that I am positive. I was told by my OB to go straight to the hospital when my water breaks so they can start antibiotics.

You'll most likely go in to labor (start having contractions) before your water breaks. It's not like in movies :) I've heard that if your water does break you have a 24hr window before you're at high risk of infection.
