Do you eat homemade treats?

It's the end of the school year and I was thinking about baking cupcakes for the staff. But some people get weirded out by homemade treats and if I let my kids help with baking, and the germs, etc.

Re: Do you eat homemade treats?

  • I would eat them unless I knew the person making them didn't wash their hands or something.

I would steer clear of making treats for others because of allergies and whatnot unless you knew them well.

As a staff member (heh.), I always prefer cash or giftcards to food gifts.

No. Yuck. I'm weird about it though. Fruit or something that can be washed/and or hasn't been cooked yet, like casserole, yes. Until the day I find a hair, lol
Or until the day someone comes in with "delicious treats!!!!" and sends out a mass email and you show up and it's all organic hippy granola bullshit with no chocolate in sight.

    Jerks.
    WTF?!  Treats=sugar and/or chocolate and/or frosting etc...

The only way oats are a treat is if they're in oatmeal cookies.

  • I think I would riot if someone announced treats and it turned out to be granola.
There damn near was.  People were PISSED.

Almost as pissed as when TPTB switched donut day for whole wheat bagel day.

    We had our revenge, though.

TPTB decided it was in the best healthy interest of the staff to replace the candy bars in the vending machine with Fiber One bars.

    That didn't end well.

  • You guys forget.

    I live in Seattle.

Every company has to out-granola the other companies.

  • I think if I knew the person and what their kitchen habits were, then maybe I would eat the treats they brought. But I usually politely decline no matter who brought it. Just my weird paranoid preference.
  • Yes. I'll eat all the baked goods.

  • I would but I was lurking a board and most people said they always end up with their cat or dog's hair in their food and it's NBD. Umm, that's a big freaking deal to me.

Dude, there's like no way to
Control it. I think it's gross, but those little monsters are everywhere!

  • I only like savory cheese danishes.

Sweet cheese danishes are the worst.

Do you like fruity danish, @cinemagoddess? I mean, that's breakfast, not dessert, so is it still a no go?

    No.

I will eat apple fritters, though.

  • Oh man. I could be eh about cheese danish until I had a Vetrushka (anyone who knows Russian I'm sure this is spelled wrong) in Seattle. Now I know that they are fantastic.

Also, I love homemade goods so I say go for it but think the ingredient list is a good idea for allergies

  • @cinemagoddess how do you eat delicious bagels then?

    Toasted with butter and jam.

I am not GF.  I would probably curl up into a little ball and die if I was GF.
I didn't think you were, nor do I think you are the type to get butthurt over stuff like that, but I couldn't remember and lots of people are just so easily offended :P

  • I've been quite traumatized by my MIL's kitchen/food safety standards. It's taught me to be wary of what comes out of other people's kitchens.

  • At my work, depending on who brought what in would depend on if others would eat it.  There is a small number of us that like really hot food so the usual question is who made it.  Or whose desk is it sitting at and is the hot freaks hovering around it.

Two years ago at our chili cook off they didn't rate heat on the dishes and put the hottest spice wise at the beginning of the line.  Needless to say, I don't think my work is going to make that mistake again.  Last year they had one leg that was all really hot chili that most people avoided.

  • Every Christmas at work, the NP group gets together and makes these huge cookie/bar/treat gift boxes for all the team members and it's amazing. Highlight of the year I dare say.

    Team eat all the things!

  • I've given the preschool teachers granola as part of a larger, class gift.  But, like @CinemaGoddess, I'm in Seattle.  And my homemade granola is pretty kick ass. :P

(But all the other treats have been treats, even though not all have had chocolate. :P )

  • I never knew so many people were germaphobes when it came to baked goods.

I would go to a bake sale and eat anything as long as it looked good. I have never once gotten food poisoning from a pot luck, bake sale, birthday treats etc. I have such a sweet tooth that it has to be covered in dirt for me not to eat it. ;) Also, when you hear of food poisening outbreaks at picnics and other public places, they don't typically blame the dessert.
