3rd Trimester

is 36 weeks late for a shower?

hi there, i'm popping in from second tri.....

my mom was just saying she and my sister want to throw me a shower and because of certain dates/timing (my sister lives out of town) the weekend they are looking at i'll be 36 weeks. is this normal? I feel like it might be a little late....but at the same time i don't want to sound unappreciative. i feel like most showers i've been to are a little earlier.

anyone have a shower that late?

thanks!

  • I'm having mine at 31 weeks. You might be really uncomfortable by the time 36 weeks rolls around.

  • I know lots of people that have...or even had one after the baby was born.

  • Mine was at 30 weeks but I have seen a lot of ladies on here having later showers. A lot of people do them after the baby is here too.  36 weeks would be fine though imo.
  • Mine will be almost that late (sometime during my 36th week).  I guess it doesn't bother me because I already plan on us buying the things we really need... gifts are a bonus!

  • I will be 36 and a half weeks at my shower.  It does seem a little late to me, but that's just how it worked out, coming after the holidays and everything.

yes, we'll already have the nursery setup by then, etc. so it's not about the gifts.... but my worry is more that i'll be so uncomfortable or possibly even already have had the baby.  not that you can't have a shower after the baby comes but i just think i'd enjoy it much more before the baby is there to worry about too.  obviously i'm happy with whenever they throw it and i'll just deal if i'm that huge and uncomfortable i guess!

  • I "think" my shower is this sunday and I will be exactly 36 weeks.  Only thing that sucks is that all my maternity clothes don't really fit anymore so i might not look as cute at 36 weeks that I would have at, say, 30 weeks.  ;)

  • I think it's a little late, as you might be uncomfortable, but you really won't need baby stuff before then, and it won't take long for you to get everything set up and ready. ?
  • I think it's on the late side. 32 weeks is optimal. I had mine early due to the holidays, and I'm glad I did because I've been on partial bed rest since 34 weeks. At 36 weeks you will be big, uncomfortable and rushing around to return crappy shower gifts and order all the items you still need for the baby.
  • i will be over 36 weeks at my 2nd shower. it does seem a little late to me, but according to MIL, who's hosting it, you are 'supposed to have your shower within weeks of giving birth.' well thats just fine and dandy then, so i guess i will put everything away, together, wash everything, etc. after the baby gets home?! or while im in labor maybe?

sorry, she makes me angry sometimes.

  • I will be either 36 or 37 weeks at the time of my shower at the end of February. I thought it was custom to have a shower around then.
  • My shower was thrown when I was 28 weeks... 36 weeks seems a little late, because you never know when Baby makes his/her appearance... Still, I agree with pp that it's OK anyway... It's nice to have a shower at all!

  • I have one at 35 weeks and I am probably going to be induced at 37 weeks.

I don't know, it is a little late, but I think you will be ok. Just make sure that you throw it out there to your mom and sister that things can happen that late in the game. ie: bed rest, she/he could be born a little early, ect. Along with the fact, that you are most likely going to be pretty uncomfortable by that point, but not everyone is. Also make sure that where ever the shower is, it is not too far from your house. Just in case of any travel restrictions by then.

    Good luck!!!

  • Unfortunately, I don't get a shower with my family and close friends since they all live 600 miles away but the one they have planned for me at work is actually when I'm going to be around 38-39 weeks! I think normally they would have had it earlier but some shiznit went down with them throwing a shower for another teacher who is only due a week before me... There was some drama and I'm just trying to ignore it. I really don't care what happens with this whole shower business at this point.
  • I am 36 weeks pregnant now.  I had my baby shower at about 30 weeks bec. i didn't want it too close to the holidays.  but the way i feel at 36 weeks i think I would be fine having it now.. especially if they are throwing it for you.  You may need more help now organizing and putting things together or away and you probably won't have to do much but look pretty.  So my opinion would be yes, you'll be fine at 36 weeks unless you are at risk of going early.

  • I am having one shower at 32 weeks and the other at 34 weeks. Worse case is that you have the baby and your shower will just have to be turned into a meet the baby get together when you are ready. If you are still pregnant at 36 weeks (which you should be unless something happens) then just take it easy and stay seated, people will come to you to talk, hang out, and open gifts.?

  • Mine is on Sunday. I'll be about 37 weeks! :)
  • I had my shower for my DS when I was 38 weeks.  It was totally fine.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Mine will be when I am 36 weeks (Feb 7).  It's not too late.  My cousin actually had hers at 39 weeks.
  • I had mine around 28 weeks, but lots of girls on here seem to have had their shower late. You might be a little uncomfortable but I don't think it'd be that bad.

  • I was 35.5 weeks at my shower.  I was fine. :)
  • i am having two, one at 34 weeks and one at 35... not much different than yours.  i think it's pretty common... i don't know many who have had them much earlier than 32 weeks (people assume that's 2 months left before you have the baby... even though we all know "things happen")... ANYWAYS... point of my story, i think 36 weeks is perfectly fine.  Cool
  • Personally, I would prefer a shower a few weeks earlier, bt as long as the baby isn't an early arrival, it won't be a problem.  I hope mine is in the next 5 weeks or so.  My friend had hers at 36 weeks and went into labor 24 hours later...she said it was kind of chaotic for her.
