Breastfed baby poop and a comment from a stranger

So now I'm paranoid about my child's poops. A woman in the waiting room at the ob office today commented on the audible gassiness of my LOs poop. I was waiting to go back and she had a bowel movement that you could hear if you were near us. It sounded like it always does, watery and gassy. Granted, this was a huge poop. I changed her soon as I got into the room and I was surprised at the amount. But you've always been able to hear her poops come out. The woman made me feel like this was abnormal, saying that I must have a lot of problems with her and gas. When in fact webe had none (knock on wood). So… Is there something wrong? Do your breastfed babies make it known when they're doing their business?

You can hear every poop from DD at our house, pretty sure it's normal.

  • Ha! It is crazy what people will comment on. Yes, BF babies have loud poops. Also, if they poop while a diaper is off look out because it literally can go across a room (or all over mom's clothes, especially if you are on your way out the door for an appt).

It is completely normal and that woman needs to make sure she knows what she's talking about rather than stressing out random women in the waiting room for no reason.

  • DD does. It's more fluid than formula poop. It's going to sound like a really wet fart...because it is. DD even yells while she poops. There's never a question.
  • Totally normal. Both my girls you could hear poop from across town I swear! Unfortunately a lot of people arent educated on BF babies. My MIL insists that because DD2 is smiling she's pooping. Drives me insane.
  • Same here. DD farts so loud DH always thinks its me and I am blaming the baby...lol. And when she poops its always a loud wet sounding explosion.
  • I get surprised by poops I didn't know had happened.  I usually assume if I didn't hear it, it didn't happen.
  • My dd is the same way. I can always hear when she poops. I believe it is very normal.
  • Thank you all! I assumed it was normal because its happen since she passed the meconium phase. I never even questioned it until today. Stupid woman.

  • Totally normal. You can hear my DS poop from across the house. It always impresses my DH. Haha.

  • Same here, we've never had a surprise poop - he is a loud pooper for sure! You can sometimes hear him in a different room.

  • Loud here too!
  • Always super loud! For my DS's 2 month check up i was in the waiting room with only one person (teenage kid). My DS did a very loud poop. I started laughing to myself because this teenage boy is probably so grossed out. I was also BFing at the time, so double wammy.

  • My LO generally goes red in her face and is loud enough when she poops. Her farts are embarrasingly loud but now we have gotten used to them. In fact, we practically celebrate when she farts since we know it makes her feel better/lighter.
And BTW, once the poop is complete, our baby smiles
  • We also have a loud BF pooper.  And he's happy and not gassy.  It's just how wet poop sounds.  I'm sorry that lady felt she had to open her mouth and say something about it.

I'm sure that some people who FF just aren't familiar with how BF poop differs.  And as an EBF mom, I'm sure if I saw a FF poop, I would probably be like "what is THAT?!?!?"

  • Even as a FF mom, I would never judge another baby's loud poops! Every baby is different, mine happens to be a silent pooper, but her farts sound like she's got a cannon tucked into her diaper! Why can't people just be more kind?!?!
