XP: French boy names

I posted this on the baby names board too, but I wanted to see what you ladies have to say.

Turns out we’re having a second boy.  I’m thrilled except that I am at a loss for boy names.  DH is French Canadian, and we have a super duper French last name, complete with lots of letters you don’t pronounce.   DH really wants a French first name that translates well into English (i.e. not something like Didier).  Here’s more info to help me find a name/give opinions.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

DS is Denis James SuperFrenchLastName, named after my father-in-law (Denis) and my father (Jim).   We use the French pronunciation “de-knee” a lot at home, but he goes by the English form “Den-nis” at daycare and outside the family.

Names that are out because they’ve already been used in the family recently:  Nicolas (DH), Daniel, Marc, Luc

Names that could work but I don’t like for various reasons:  Henri, Robert, Antoine, Georges, Thomas

DH Likes:  Roger (his uncle and my uncle/godfather’s name.  I’m vetoing it for a first name just because I think my dad would be offended if I named a son after his BIL/my uncle and not him.  I would be okay with it as a middle name).

My Picks:

-          Eugene (my dad’s middle name).  I like Gene as a nn, but I think DH has vetoed this.  He thinks it is a dorky name.  But I think Denis and Gene are cute together.

-          Jacques (the French form of James, my dad’s name).  My main hesitations are that it is too close to “Jack” and I’m tired of the Jack trend and I don’t want it to be anglicized to Jack, people don’t realize it’s the French form of James, and it may be too French for the mid-size southern city where we live.

-          Louis.  No family connection, although I think DH had a perverted great uncle named Louis, but I think that is far enough removed it wouldn’t be a big deal. It is also technically an ex’s name for me, but my ex went by his middle name.  But I think is it a cute name that works well in French and English.

Other ideas?  My grandfathers were both named John, but I’m not a fan of John and the French form “Jean” looks too much like “Jeanne” to Americans.

Re: XP: French boy names

  • Ok - I went to babynames.com and used their advanced search for Boy Names by Nationality - I'm throwing out the ones I like the most:

    Bern
    Burke
    Augustin
    Marshall
    Leon
    Percival (Percy)
    Sebastien

I also knew a Jean-Francois from Montreal who went by J.F. in the US.  So if you came up with something that had cute initials for a nickname, that might also work.  (Jean-Paul = JP, Jean-Didier = JD, etc)

I think Gene works well with Dennis too but here's some suggestions
    Andre (Andy - love Andy)
    Eric
Gabriel (Gabe) - also love but DH has vetoed
    Leon (Leo)
    Marcus (mark)
Oliver (Olly - another one DH has vetoed sadly)
    Robert

Good luck! We are team green so far but are struggling to agree in boys names too!

I taught a kid last year with the name Théophile. He went by Théo (Kinda sounds like Tay-o) by his French teachers and Theo by the kids. Eta - I also really like Alexandre and you could use Alex for short
  • I love Jacques and Louis!

    OMG! I love Alexandre!

I don't have anything to add to this conversation, except that this would be on our list if it weren't too close to FIL's name.

Also, I love Eugene with nn Gene.

  • I was going to suggest Jean too, but only use that name if you are ok with him having the same name as an old prime minister :) there is also Marcell.
  • You are not alone! This is my name thing too- I am a French teacher and have family in France. I will talk about this baby in both French and English so I want a name that works fairly well and sounds kind of normal in both languages. I'm team green so working on a boy's name and girl's.
So other ideas for boys: Robert, Lucas, David, Vincent... Everything else I've come up with has been mentioned
So glad I'm in good company!! :-)
  • I love Emile, but not sure how it would be anglosized.

  • One of my friends is French Canadian and had an adorable boy named Ludovic. I always loved his name. Nick name Lu or Ludo.

I also like Lucien, Enzo, Adrien, Martin
    My prince

Thanks all!  I think Ludovic may be a great grandfather's of DH.  I think DH and I won't even fully discuss names for another month or so.  I will likely be back with polls once we've narrowed it down.  There have been good suggestions on here.
