Turns out we’re having a second boy. I’m thrilled except that I am at a loss for boy names. DH is French Canadian, and we have a super duper French last name, complete with lots of letters you don’t pronounce. DH really wants a French first name that translates well into English (i.e. not something like Didier). Here’s more info to help me find a name/give opinions. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
DS is Denis James SuperFrenchLastName, named after my
father-in-law (Denis) and my father (Jim).
We use the French pronunciation “de-knee”
a lot at home, but he goes by the English form “Den-nis” at daycare and outside
the family.
Names that are out because they’ve already been used in the family recently: Nicolas (DH), Daniel, Marc, Luc
Names that could work but I don’t like for various reasons: Henri, Robert, Antoine, Georges, Thomas
DH Likes: Roger (his uncle and my uncle/godfather’s
name. I’m vetoing it for a first name
just because I think my dad would be offended if I named a son after his BIL/my
uncle and not him. I would be okay with
it as a middle name).
My Picks:
- Eugene (my dad’s middle name). I like Gene as a nn, but I think DH has vetoed this. He thinks it is a dorky name. But I think Denis and Gene are cute together.
- Jacques (the French form of James, my dad’s name). My main hesitations are that it is too close to “Jack” and I’m tired of the Jack trend and I don’t want it to be anglicized to Jack, people don’t realize it’s the French form of James, and it may be too French for the mid-size southern city where we live.
- Louis. No family connection, although I think DH had a perverted great uncle named Louis, but I think that is far enough removed it wouldn’t be a big deal. It is also technically an ex’s name for me, but my ex went by his middle name. But I think is it a cute name that works well in French and English.
Other ideas? My grandfathers were both named John, but I’m not a fan of John and the French form “Jean” looks too much like “Jeanne” to Americans.
Re: XP: French boy names
