PR: meds or faking it?

If you knew your kid liked the taste of medicine (Motrin, in this case), how often would you feel comfortable giving it if they say they have a headache?  It's not that it's constant but I know Aiden likes it and I feel like after he's been legitimately sick like with a fever and has had it, he remembers he likes it and then wants it.  The problem is that I suffer from really nasty headaches (just like my brother and my mom) so I worry he's following in my footsteps.  Sometimes I give it and sometimes I wait to see if he keeps mentioning his head hurting and usually he doesn't.  I just feel badly because this morning he said it hurt and asked for medicine and a band aid (which is what made me think he was faking) and I didn't give it but when I dropped him at school I could see across his eyes that he looked "off."  I told them to keep an eye on him and let me know.

So what's the cutoff for how often you'd give it without much hesitation vs really scrutinizing the situation?

  • @ScoutNumbers05 hm, I hadn't thought of that.  Do they make plain for kids?  Making it taste good is such a catch 22 lol

  • @Hawkward that's good to know.  I'm sure there's no danger in giving Motrin every few weeks but I'd just rather not if he doesn't need it.  But if he reacts to headaches like I do, I'm afraid I'll never be able to tell.  I function really well with them until I'm to the point of needing my Rx medicine so I hesitate to think "oh he SEEMS ok" because very few people can tell when I'm battling a headache :(

  • Could you distract him with a book or something and see if he forgets about it or how he is acting? DS1 fake coughs and says he's sick to get cough medicine because it tastes good too. I don't know about kids with migraines, but I can always tell if DS1 really doesn't feel good by how he reacts when I try to distract him with a book or movie
