October 2014 Moms

A worry wart question for you other moms.

So this past weekend I went on a boat ride on a lake.  For who knows what reason, I never even thought of asking my OB at my appointment if this was okay.  It dawned on me after we had been out for probably 45 minutes to and hour that it might not be safe (you know with the rocking and occasional bumps).  It wasn't a tiny little speed boat or fishing boat.  It was a bigger one that could pull tubes and skiers and fit probably 8 people or more.  The lake was calm and wasn't busy and the driver was aware I was expecting so kept the ride pretty steady and calm.

My question is have any of you other moms gone on boat rides while pregnant?  What did your OB say?   I called my birthing center and they said it was probably fine as long as I had been feeling the baby move.  I have felt her move since then so I'm sure we're good but I'm just curious.
We are so excited to grow our family!

  • I went on a boat at maybe 17 weeks and had no issues. It was pretty bumpy at times, too. The next day was actually the first time I felt a kick!

My doctor never said anything about boats and I honestly didn't think about it. My friend, who had JUST found out she was pregnant (so she was about 4.5 weeks at the time) was there, too, and her LO is still trucking right along.

I think use your judgment. Don't do things that are going to be really rough. Roller coasters and ATVs are probably out. But your average boat ride is probably fine. Baby has lots of cushioning in there right now.

  • I live near the water so I'm on the boat all the time.  I actually went out on the boat yesterday.  My OB said I couldn't go offshore fishing any more and to be careful if the water is really rough, but other than that you should be fine.

  • I'm going on a cruise next week... does that count?

    I'm sure you'll be fine!

  • Being on a boat I've been told is completely fine, it's the bouncing or being jostled that you want to avoid. If you were just rocking with the waves, nothing to worry about.

  • I don't see how being on a boat is any worse than driving on a bumpy road in a car. I went on a boat last pregnancy and DS is fine:)

  • I went out on a snorkeling tour at 17 weeks and the water was rough. I didn't think much about it beforehand (honestly I didn't think it would be that rough!) but baby is fine. I did skip out on a jetboat your at 9 weeks though. FWIW I never asked my Dr. so who knows what they would have said!

  • Unless you were jumping off the boat while it was moving, I think you'll be fine.

  • Definitely okay. The only time my doctor said I should avoid a boat ride was when I was put on 'semi bedrest' and told I couldn't travel to the island where my family is in case the baby came early.
