Supplemental Maternity Insurance for GC

Hi guys,

I have not been active on here for a while, but things are beginning to move along with my SIL as our GC.  We ran into a bump in the road today when we found out that our GC's insurance (Aetna) will not cover anything associated with surrogacy pregnancies, and they told my SIL that they do not have any supplemental plans to offer either.

I'm not sure where to look next for a maternity rider or supplemental insurance.  Anyone else been through this and have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Supplemental Maternity Insurance for GC

  • I have UHC with no surrogacy exclusion.  For my last surrogacy I had Cigna and had no issues.  I'm not sure if there's a waiting period before getting pg.  There's an insurance provider that's big in surrogacy called New Life (I think that's the name of it).  I would ask on one of the surrogacy forums, I know there are others that have been in your position.

  • You can buy new life plans but they are very expensive. Lloyd's of London also offers a surrogacy plan. Is it an option to get something through your states health care exchange? You might have to wait for open enrollment. Not sure if she would have to cancel her current plan also. It's a bummer. I'm a surrogate for a family member and they ended up just getting the new life back up plan and we are hoping we don't have to activate it.
  • I have a PPO & Surro babies r not covered by my plan. My IPs had to buy me a plan both times I find out what they went throw & got & get back to you.
  • I forgot about LOL.  Check out their exclusions.  I think I remember hearing that they won't cover a pg over twins.  I have no experience with them, so that's just what I read off a different site a long time ago.

  • My IPs got the info for the insurance from our agency that matched us they said. The insurance they got is called Universal. If you google them lots of info comes up & you can use any Dr with them & they also cover birth center births with a midwife.
    Best of Luck!!!
  • Thanks for the suggestions!  Since I posted, I've done a good deal of research.  We are considering the New Life back up plan, which can be purchased at anytime.  We also are considering waiting until open enrollment and trying to get her a secondary plan that does cover surrogate pregnancies. Thank you!
