WWJ13D? (regarding formula vs milk issue)

My daughter turned one a few days ago, and we have been transitioning her to WCM from Enfamil for about 2 weeks. Here lies the issue:

We had been purchasing our formula from Amazon subscribe and save, and miscalculated and have far too much. Like over $50 worth of formula too much. I cannot return it because it is part of a larger shipment of formula from the subscribe and save and I cannot return it piecemeal.

Do I?

1. Donate the extra formula?
2. Try to sell it (which I have done, but I have no takers so far)
3. Or give it to her by keeping the transition to WCM very slow in order to use up all the formula.
4. Something else entirely

I am tempted to do WCM during the day at daycare (that means I can quit making bottles for daycare each night), but continuing to give a bottle of formula first thing in the AM and before bed. But if I do this, it will take me even longer to get rid of the formula.

What should I do?

Edited to add: I feel kinda cheap contemplating giving her formula longer than necessary or age-appropriate because I have it in my house. But I really don't want all of this to go to waste!

  • I'd probably donate it if it's sealed, I donated some that didn't agree with his system when he was younger. That being said I totally get your dilemma, I'd have a hard time making the choice too!

If it were me, I would either donate it or keep giving it to her. I wouldn't want it to go to waste.
  • If you donate them see if you can get a tax receipt for their value.

  • We are still giving Grayson a couple oz of formula a day because his iron levels were low. I wouldn't waste it either ask your pedi if its ok for her to keep getting some or try to donate or craigslist.

  • We are still giving Lily one bottle or so of formula a day. She has lower iron levels and there is extra iron in formula. There really isn't any problem with continuing the formula for some time. If you really want to get rid of it, donate it.

  • @subliminalrabbit‌ yes it is all healthy but my mom is trying to convince me that giving her formula after age one is somehow wrong
  • I donated the sample cans I got to a women's shelter and they were super thrilled to get them. I later sent them diapers that we outgrew and they were also really thankful for them. They said that very few people think to give them baby things.

  • @nikel13 ok I will probably do the sane! I have no issue with her having it but wasn't sure if I was dragging this out too lobg
  • I also just think of it as added benefits I would continue it until you run out.

  • where have you tried selling it?

FB yard sale pages are awesome with stuff like that. Or maybe just try to sell it reduced so you can get rid of it. Claire was drinking formula up until she was 12.5 months, so I see no harm in giving it to her for a few extra weeks either.

  • My LO had allergies and will be on formula for another 6 months or so. The pedi said there's nothing wrong with giving it to him a little longer. You could always try and sale it on a Facebook group. There are some that are local baby groups that always have formula for sale near me.

  • My neighborhood has a moms facebook group that people always post stuff like that on. Nobody bit though with my formula posting. I posted it at a reduced price too!
  • There's nothing wrong with formula after one.  It's more well rounded than milk so after one it's more "you can do milk" vs "you have to stop doing formula."  Q still gets formula when he wakes in the middle of the night because it's easier and I'm lazy :)

I would just use it up.
  • I would definitely use it up. Our nurses here told us to start transitioning after 9 months. He turns one later this week and we only just finished the formula this week. I just waited until I had used up everything we had here, no point in such expensive milk going to waste IMO.

I love this idea and just put aside a few cans of formula and food Olivia would not eat/drink. Definitely finding a shelter to donate this week.

    ETA: not eat/drink... durrr.

We mix milk with formula using the same ratio as water. We use coconut milk and the toddler formula because DD turned up her nose at WCM but the theory is the same. For us we're doing it because DD needs the extra calories, but I don't see where it could hurt if you already have it.
I've wondered about this and meant to ask the pedi but forgot.  I heard you're not supposed to mix the formula with anything but water because it mixing it with other stuff like milk makes the concentration of some of the nutrients too high.

My pedi just told me that formula does not automatically become poison after age one. He was being funny, but his point was it is still fine to give it to them. He told me to use up what I had, even if it took a few weeks.
