Working Moms

Monday Morning Vents

Hope you all had a nice weekend!

My MMV for today: what's up with asking pregnant and new moms whether they can scale it back at work (when there's no medical need)? I'm with a midwife group that wants me to walk outside for at least 30 minutes everyday. The only reason I come anywhere near that is because of public transit and my commute to work. Yet, at my appointment last week, I was asked if I was still working full time and if I could cut back. No, I can't cutback without a reason and if I did, then you'd be on my case for not walking enough. Is there something you'd like me to do differently? Perhaps I could make the change while still working? Oh, no change needed? Everything looks great? Okay then, thanks for sharing random pie in the sky admonitions with me then. I've heard Japan's maternity leave starts a month before the due date. Perhaps you'd like me to move there to have my baby.

Re: Monday Morning Vents

  • So today I am traveling for my 3 days of team meetings (face-to-face). Some might remember but this means sharing a room with a colleague - NOT looking forward to this or to being away from the LOs, one of whom is sick :(
What a crappy start to this week. Plus I have way too much work to do and would rather be doing that than wasting my time have 'pretend' I want to be here conversations with my coworkers for 3 days.

  • Last night, I went out with my family for a delicious steak dinner and a nice chain (think Ruths Chris).  I was up sick all night long.  Well, I did catch a cat nap or 2 on the bathroom floor, so there's that.  Luckily I was scheduled to work from home, but I'm on back to back calls all day long.  I have a break between 4pm and 8pm, then back on calls.  I feel awful.
  • @mae0111, that sucks, hope you feel better.

On a similar note, DS had a stomach virus or something starting last Wed and it seemed to get better-until last night.  My mom let him eat berries yesterday, so last night he puked exorcism style all.over.the.place.  And it was bright red.  It was like a horror movie.  On a lighter note, DH had a good laugh at the horrified face I made..good times.

  • @mae0111‌, that's awful. I hope you feel better. I was late to work because my daughter hid my wallet in her play tent.
    Thank you

And that has totally happened at my house.  Wallet is in the tent, keys wind up in the toy chest... my kid likes to rifle through my bags and steal all my stuff.  It is not helped by the fact that I'm totally scattered, but the little kleptos in my house are definitely to blame a lot.

I have a lame one. I feel that no matter how much time I spend cleaning, there is always clutter in my house. I actually feel more stress at home than I do at work because there is clutter everywhere I look. Luckily, DH saw how stressed I was and offered to pick up around the house today.

  • My weekend was too darned short. And I need to spend today reading a 50 page audit manual to see if I agree with our new procedures. (I'm over our audit program.) The audit manual is going to put me to sleep. So is the rain we've been having for 2 days.
  • So the non-vent is that kiddo is showing signs that he really wants to Potty train. This is awesome, except one thing. The pre-toddler room he is in, doesn't have a toilet since it's typically for 12-24 month olds. Unfortunately, there isn't any space in the 24-36 room and there probably won't be until September when all the kids age up. So Kiddo wants to potty train, and we want to support that, but it feels like we shouldn't really push since he has to use diapers at daycare until he moves up to the next room. Really hoping he doesn't regress when he finally can train at daycare.

DD has started throwing tantrums - like screaming and flailing on the ground tantrums.  She just turned 1 so there's not much we can do besides ignore or redirect.  It's driving me batty and DH is out of town this week so I have no help in dealing with it.

So has my about-to-be 2 year old. And my in laws were over yesterday (her daycare), and I learned my MIL appeases her. I'm going to have to tell MIL that 2 year olds are like Hitler- appeasement is not the answer! Thank God the child is starting preschool the first week of September.

my daughter has been beahving like the devil's spawn this weekend and this morning.  I overslept because I stayed up too late watching Harry Potter movies :)  I'm nauseous, and my gastro intestinal system is way overactive.

Oh and I have about 50 audit reports that i need to review and issue....today.  /sigh why can't we all just play on the bump all day and fantasize about the 'perfect' children we are growing? :)

  • Okay, second vent: my boss comes to me with another outpouring of shock over my body as a pregnant woman every week. (btw - I'm not the only pregnant person in my org, let alone on my floor - there are several of us. I'm not the biggest pregnant person to walk these halls in recent history! It really shouldn't be a shock that I'm full term.) The first time, I thought, "oh, how odd, maybe she's just surprised after not seeing me for the past couple weeks" but it's been 3 weeks since and it's every week, if not more often, she goes on & on about how huge I am. If it were anyone else, I would reply the way I did to others - blank stare & walk away, or look disgusted and say I needed to get back to work. But I don't want to be that rude to my boss, yet I don't want to encourage it either, so I've taken to ignoring. She says "wow, you're huge! no way you're going to make it!" and I say ". . .How was your weekend?" or just now, she clearly was about so say something, so I pretended I didn't hear her and started up with another colleague about work but she chased me down to deliver her weekly observations on my body, to which I replied "huh?" and walked away and she still shouted after me with more. Um, hello? Is this not likely incredibly awkward? I'm giving you an out - you got caught with your foot in your mouth, I'm pretending it didn't happen, and yet you're insisting on becoming even more ridiculous. Chasing after me? Let it go.
