Awful eczema??

We've called the pedi about DS's rash and they think it is eczema but I am tempted to take him in anyway to see if they think it is worth giving him some kind of stronger lotion or something for it. Per their instructions we use hydrocortisone cream 2x a day and aveeno eczema cream as often as needed. When we keep up with that, his legs and arms clear up within 4-5 days. But if we start cutting back on the hydrocortisone it comes back with a vengeance. His legs look AWFUL right now, plus he has some spots on his arms, feet, and I just noticed one on his neck too. He's completely unphased so I know they don't itch or anything but seriously they look terrible. And I don't know that applying that much hydrocortisone cream so often is the answer!! Obviously I will be checking with the pedi again but anyone else have a LO with awful eczema and if so how did/do you treat it?

Re: Awful eczema??

  • Yes, my DD has awful eczema.  Most of the time we can keep it under control by regularly applying the Aveeno baby eczema cream lotion.  Lately her breakouts have been on her cheeks and she will scratch them until they bleed.  We have a prescription cream that we put on it when it gets like that.  The Aveeno cream will help, but the prescription clears it up much quicker.
Good luck.  It's something we've struggled with since she was born 2 1/2 years ago and is frustrating when it's persistent like that.

DS had eczema when he was younger and we used Cerave which cleared it right up. It's an OTC lotion, similar to Cetaphil. Be sure to get the type with ceramides in it.

But based on what you described though, you might want to consider bring LO to a dermatologist.

Try coconut oil. I've used it for a ton of stuff & heard its good for eczema.

We see a pediatric dermatologist.  We use a prescription for bad flares but in between we bath daily (if she starts to flare then twice a day) and lots of lotion (put on very thick right after bath)  We use vanicream and it is good for us.  Honestly it's a lot of work keeping it under control.

Eczema is usually a sign of an underlying issue like a food allergy. DS1 had really bad eczema as a baby and around a year we discovered he had a lot of food allergies. Once we got those under control, his eczema has gotten a lot better and non-existent in the summer. Something to think about and look into because using steroid creams everyday is not ideal, even though that's what most pedis resort to.

  • Thank you for your responses... DS did have a dairy intolerance when he was younger but we have assumed he's outgrown it.  If you go to a dermatologist, do they do allergy testing as well?  (We had been seeing an allergist, although he never was officially tested since he was so young at the time.)

  • I second the coconut oil. Thats what the pedi derm advaed us. Massage skin with virgin coconug oil for 5-10 mins before bath then use cetaphil soap or aveeno for bathing. After bath slather averno baby eczema. Works wonders. I think u may get VCO from asian stores. Hth

i love you, my little mooncake mahal kita

Our derm was the one who referred us to the allergist when he couldn't get DD"s eczema to clear. He did a small biopsy and based on the cells he saw he referred us to the allergist. Within 48 hours of visiting the allergist (she prescribed 2 ointments and had us slather with Cerave after the ointments) DD's skin was clear. My poor kid had lived the first 9 mo of her life with head to toe eczema so as far as I was concered the allergist was a miracle worker! She had to get DD's skin clear first so she could do the allergy testing.

  • What worked for us was cortisone for flairs, this cleansing water https://www.amazon.com/Mustela-Stelatopia-No-Rinse-Cleansing-13-5oz/dp/B009QZ676G/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1403532862&sr=8-10&keywords=mustela+stelatopia and this moisturizer https://www.amazon.com/Mustela-Stelatopia-Moisturizing-Cream-ounces/dp/B00095LIP2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403532862&sr=8-1&keywords=mustela+stelatopia

Pricey but worked fantastically for us. If it is that bad in the summer though, you definitely may need to get to a derm and think about allergies. GL!
