Ketones/Gestational Diabetes

I was diagnosed almost two months ago with GD, and now the endocrinologist has be checking my urine every morning for ketones. I've had a couple negative readings, but yesterday and today I got moderate and small. Anyone have any idea what that means or what I should be doing??

Re: Ketones/Gestational Diabetes

  • Most likely you are not getting enough carbs. Have you been working with a nutritionist? I would give him/her a call.

I could be wrong (I don't have GD), but I believe that means you have cut out too many carbs.  Try introducing a few more healthy carbs into your diet.  I'm sure someone with more knowledge can help you out better.
Yes, I have GD and my nutritionist said that they were a sign that you weren't eating enough carbs.  The risk is that you'll lose weight and thus, the baby won't gain enough each week.  I would add some more carbs back into your diet - maybe think back to what you were eating on days that you had negative ketones (since on those days you had plenty of carbs).

  • I don't have GD, but I had some ketones this morning at my 32 week appt. My doctor asked what I had for breakfast ( which was very small due to a bad cold) and she said that would cause it. She also said dehydration can cause them to show in urine.

I was told to call the dietitian if I test even for traces of ketones. They recommend adding a carb and a protein serving to your night time snack.
