How much sleep are you getting, Mom?

On a good night- i get a total of 5 hours total. I get LO (she's 5 weeks) down around 10:30/11:00 and get a stretch of 3 hours of sleep. I'll be up for about an hour around 2 and then will get another stretch of 2 or 2.5 hours of sleep and we are up for the day around 5:30/6. She is usually awake at this time despite me trying to get her to so another stretch of sleep. So that's about 5-5.5 hours total through the night. I try to catch a nap sometime during the day but don't always. How about you ladies? Do you have 2 or 3 stretches of sleep at night? Are you getting in naps?

Re: How much sleep are you getting, Mom?

  • I've never thought about totals. Zachary will be 3 weeks tomorrow. We go to bed around 8, I read until his 10-11 pm feeding (most of the time), sleep between 11-2, feed from 2-230, sleep between 230-530, feed at 530, sleep between 6-8, DD gets up around 8, then we start our day. But I dont' usually fall asleep right after feedings and there are times when he still stays up between feedings. So on a good night 5 hours....maybe.

  • My night is just like yours. However a few nights this week he has been going down around 8-9 and waking up around 1-2. And then goes back to sleep and wakes around 5-6. I usually get about 5-7hrs of sleep but it's all broken up.
  • I am on the same schedule on a normal night. LO is 5 weeks. The last 2 nights though, he will only sleep when laying on us. So LO is getting way more sleep than us.
  • J goes down around 10:30-11:30 MOTN feed between 2-3 back down around 3:30-5:30 then up at 8. 5-6 hours broken up. Last night DH handled him so I got 5 hours straight now I can't go back to sleep but I actually feel like a real person.
  • Very close to you...she still takes a long time to get back to sleep rather than nurse and go back to sleep so that stinks. Also, most nights for the second stretch I sleep in the rocker with her because she fights going back down in the RNP after her first stretch. So half of my little sleep isn't very restful and hurts my entire body sleeping in a chair for a couple of hours off and on. I rarely get a nap anymore as she usually only naps while baby wearing. This too shall pass right:)? Yawn...

  • I'm sleeping way more now than I did pregnant, or even before, really. My guy is 6.5 weeks- I get a 6 hour stretch (11-5 or 10:30-4:30), then back to sleep from about 6-8. If he's up frequently (he was last week during his leap, hitting himself in the face all night), I nap with him on me during the day and get about 5 hours.
  • I probably get 7-8 but it is totally broken up. Probably a 4 hour chunk at the beginning of the night (LO usually sleeps 5 or so hours for his first stretch but he goes to bed earlier than I do),then a 2 hour chunk after his first feed bc it takes me forever to fall back asleep, then if DH takes him after his second feeding I usually get 1-2 more hours.

  • I try to get LO to go down around 8, then I finish up chores and get ready for bed around 9. He usually wakes up for his first MOTN feeding at 1 (this is a HUGE improvement for us!) so there's 4 hrs. He takes forever to go back to sleep after feedings and then gets up every 2-3 hrs so I get maybe 7 hrs total over night, sometimes only 5. When MH doesn't work he takes over after the 4am feeding so I can sleep in. Once or twice a week my mom will come over and I'll take a 3 hour nap which always feels amazing. Life is so much better when you're not completely sleep deprived.
  • 8-10. But Ds has been like this since day 1. No secret. He just does it.

He goes down at 9 and we get up for the day at 730. He sleeps a long stretch from 9-12 or 1. Then up every two hours. I usually fall asleep fast. I am such a bear on no sleep. I don't handle it well.

We've been very lucky to have a great night time sleeper. We plan on moving him to his own bed in the next couple of weeks and I hope the routine stays.
  • 7-8 hours for me usually. I go to bed at 10 and DH feeds DD around that time with pumped milk bottle. She sleeps from usually 10:30 to 3 or 4am. I get up with her for A feeding and diaper change and back down for another 3-4 hours before waking up around 7-8am.

  • I would say around 7. DS usually goes to sleep around 10-11. DH gives the first feeding. Most nights the longest stretch is 3 hours but once in a while he gives us 4. Then the rest of the night every 2 hours. He is my only child so sometimes we don't get out of bed until 10. And believe it or not, I have not had a single nap since he had been born. I'm not much of a napper and by the time I would fall asleep, he would be waking up
  • On nights the toddler doesn't keep us up and my toddler sleeps through the night, we typically get about 4-5 hours. LO will go about 5-6 hours but I typically don't get to bed exactly when LO does. Then I am typically up anywhere from an hour to three hours. Then we will typically get another 2-3 hours of sleep. With the toddler and the newborn, I am rarely ever able to nap during the day. So, on a good night, I average about 7 hours total. I can survive on this, but the problem arises when the toddler decides to be up half the night.

  • I get about 3 hours at the beginning of the night and then he's up at 2 for a feeding. He then usually sleeps until 5/530. He only nurses from 1 side for each MOTN feeding, so I wake up around 4 needing to pump. I bet I'm only getting about 4-5 hrs total. This explains my crankiness.
    image
  • Sounds like most of out schedules are the same. DS goes down about 9 and sleeps til 2. Then 230-530 and about 545-7.. I'm hoping we can start stretching that 9-2 til about 4 and I will be golden! It's so much harder going back to work now and with broken sleep
  • I typically can't get DS2 down until around 10-ish. He sleeps until 1-ish, eats for 10 minutes and goes back to sleep. I'll be up for another 20-30 after that before going to sleep. He sleeps in 2.5-3 hour stretches and I'm up for probably half an hour of each of those until 7 when he's up for the day. Sometimes I can get him a little later but not much. And DS1 is up by 8 anyhow. Between the two boys I don't get much napping in. As in I don't get to nap. At all. Sucks.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • Very similar to others. About 5-6 hours. We get ready for bed at 9 but sometimes she doesn't fall asleep until 11-12. Then a feeding about 2-2:30 and another about 6-7. She has reflux and we sit up for about 20 min after feedings but she only eats for about 10 min at night. We used to go back to sleep until about 9 when she was up during the night more but now we are getting me back on a work schedule for when I go back.
  • Usually he goes down between 7-8 and typically wakes up around 10 or 11 for one more feeding before his long stretch. Sleeps until 4 or 5 am, eats and usually takes an hour to go back down, I get maybe an hour or two more of sleep before he is up again between 7-8. Then repeat and usually I try to squish in another nap before getting up around 10. There is still a lot of variation with him though. Sometimes he stays up later and will sleep longer, sometimes he starts his long stretch at 8. A lot of times after his second time waking up I can only cat nap for 20 minutes at a time. He is 5 weeks today. I would say I am usually getting 7-8 hours broken up.
  • He's been falling asleep around 9 sleeps for 5 hours wakes for half hour and back down for another 2.5 hours. Then be will eat again and go back to bed for another 2-3 hours. From 9pm to 9 am he ate three times and gave us a good stretch of sleep. He's 5 weeks old tomorrow. He enjoys eating and sleeping.
  • Probably 7 hours. He goes down at 11 with us. Sleeps until 6 and nurses. Then goes back down until 8 or 9. But I'm up with the toddler at 6, so I don't get more sleep. MH, who needs about 10 hours to function, is not handling this well. I'm okay with 7.

Probably around 6 or 7 hours but it varies. DS will go down around 10 or 11. DH takes the first feeding which is anywhere between 2-4 depending on the night. I'll sleep til the next feeding which is anywhere from 4-7. Then I nap when DS goes back down for an hour or 2. Last night I went to bed around 11:30, DH fed him around 4 and then I didn't get up for his 2nd feeding til 7 and then napped from 10-11:30. It was wonderful.

  • Not enough. I normally need 9 hours to be good. We get about 4-5 hours the first stretch then 3 the next with an hour between stretches. We once got 7 hours but that was a fluke.

DS2 does cluster feed around 1030-1130p, which helps.

  • LO is one month old. I get 8 to 10 hours of sleep, on a good night. I sleep with LO in the bed even though I was against it at first. I gave up my fear and went with what works for us. He gets a substantial bottle before bed, around 11 or 12 from H, and then BF all night, while laying on his side- and it works wonders. I wake up to switch sides, and to burp him when he fusses, which is rarely. He lets me know if he needs to switch boobs too. lol When he wakes up, he will eat a 4 oz bottle as well, but as long as he is next to me nursing he is content all night. The only time it gets dicey is if he is really gassy, but I recently started giving him gas drops before bed and once in the AM when I wake up to pee and that seems to take care of the problem.

  • I have been very fortunate... my lo will go to sleep around 8-9pm and sleep anywhere from 5-8 hours straight (one night was 9 hours straight), take about 45-60 min to eat and then go back to sleep for another 2-3 hours!
  • Between 9.5 and 10.5 hours per night sice about 2 weeks. My kids value their sleep. I-)

  • Sounds like most of us are in the same boat. A bit jelly of those of you getting more but will use it as inspiration. Just got in a 3.5 stretch of sleep which feels amazing. Now LO is wide eyed so we'll see I second stretch goes!
  • I have had a ton of visitors (read, chaos) since Nora was born, so we haven't gotten a "bedtime" down yet — But LO goes down anywhere between 9:30 and 11:30p and sleeps until 9 to 11:30a with a few wake ups during the night. When she wakes up the first time I pull her into bed with me and nurse while lying on my side. Usually I fall back asleep instead of putting her back in her bassinet and just sleep with her until we get up for the day. So, on average, I probably cobble together 7 to 9 hours a night. Eventually I would like to move her bed and wake times back a few hours, but for now I am just going to enjoy the sleep.

  • I get about 6-7. He will sleep for a 4-5 hour stretch (usually something like 11-4:30), and then I feed him, rock him for a while and put him back down from like 5:30/6-7:30/8. I'm tired but getting a crap ton more sleep than I did during the last few weeks of pregnancy!

  • I'm getting about 5 or 6. DS goes to bed around 9. I get to sleep by 10. He wakes around 2 to eat. Then sleeps from 3 to 5. Sometimes I get him back down at 6 for maybe an hour but dh gets up for work so i usually get up to help with DS1.

Sleep? What? DS has decided he can only sleep on me so I drift in and out of consciousness with a baby on my chest. Three nights of this. .. I'd be ecstatic to go back to two hours at a time.

  • I'm on a similar schedule as everyone. He eats at around 11pm and then sleeps until 3ish. Then he wakes up again around 6 and I'll fall asleep with him through his next feeding at 9am. I really need to try going to bed earlier and waking up earlier because going back to work is going to be painful but I still have 6 weeks left so I'm not going to stress right now
  • 5 or 6 hours average at night, and sometimes 30-60 minutes during the day when the kids happen to nap at the same time.
