Question for the girls who sew

Ok, I used to sew (10 years in 4-H) and was able to make some fairly advanced stuff (jackets with linings, work with wool, etc).  BUT, that was all many years ago.  I'm 33 and haven't touched a sewing machine since I was 18.  I've been very seriously considering buying a machine and getting back into it a little, just for funsies.

So, my question:  How easily do you think I'll pick it back up?  Is it like riding a bike?  Any books or websites you recommend?

Re: Question for the girls who sew

  • I learned to sew when I was a little girl from my grandmother.  I did not sew for 20 years and once I figured out how to thread the machine it came back so easily.

It still takes some practice because I learned on a 1952 Singer, much different than new machines.

  • It comes back to you fast.  I hadn't sewn since middle school home ec and picked it up again 7 years ago.
