High temp (102-103) for 18mo old

I will call the doctor if I get seriously concerned or if he starts having other weird symptoms, but just wanting to get some thoughts and opinions -

DS never really "acts" sick, like he's always running around, wanting to play, etc. Yesterday evening DH thought he felt hot, and he had a temp of 103. He was still eating fine, normal diapers, energetic, etc., but a temp like that is concerning, so I took DS to the minute clinic.

They looked in his ears, mouth, felt his lymph nodes, listened to his breathing, and did a strep test, and all that came back normal, so it pretty much rules out an ear infection, strep, or a bad respiratory problem. The doctor said it's most likely viral.

DS' temp has remained high but controlled if we alternate Tylenol and Advil. This afternoon we waited about 4 hours after the last dose of Tylenol, and his temp was back up to 102.

I've already arranged for my mom to watch DS Mon - Wed because I have to go OOT for a work trip, but I feel bad leaving him and am afraid that maybe he'll get worse or something else is wrong. DH will be here too, but he has to work and has some anxiety issues when DS is sick.

Could it be teething? His canine teeth are coming through, but idk if that could cause such high temps. I just checked his temp at 10 after giving him infant Advil at 9pm, and it was back to 98.7, but I am just worried about him.

  • My DD is like your LO, rarely acts sick. If it's viral it shouldn't last more than 3 days or so doctors keep telling me. If he still has a fever after that I would go back to the docs and ask for more tests.

Thank you, @RVASC811‌! I know none of you can really know what's wrong with him or tell me with certainty that he'll be ok, but I'm just feeling stressed and worried. I do hope that it's a virus that will be gone in a day or two.

We actually went to "The Little Clinic," which is in Kroger, and I was super impressed. We tried to go to the "Minute Clinic" in CVS, but I was checking in at 7:05, I got through all the info on the damn kiosk, and then it said, "I'm sorry, we can't take any new patients at this time because the number of patients waiting is the maximum allowed before the closing time of 7:30pm. Please call 1-800-blah blah for additional assistance." And they couldn't help.

"The Little Clinic" was great, zero wait, and I checked in with a person instead of a kiosk. I will definitely go back there if we have another urgent care need.

The doctor said to alternate Tylenol and Advil, monitor him, and take him to the ER if his temp exceeds 104, so that's what we've been doing.
  • Sorry your LO isnt feeling well. That said, I fucking hate fevers. Like others have said, with a fever that high, teething is an unlikely cause and its probably viral.

This past may, my DS (now 17 months) spiked a fever (between 102-104) and ended up having a febrile seizure from it. We of course had him rushed to the children's hospital, but they ended telling us its most likely a virus and to control the fever with tylenol/motrin and follow up with the pedi. 2 days after that he was still running a fever, so they ended up treating with antibiotics fora sinus infection. The fever broke a day or 2 after that.

Sorry that was long winded...fevers suck. I hope your little guy feels better soon.

Thanks, everyone, his temp was back down this morning, and hopefully it's gone for good (or until the next time).

@Inkogneetoh‌, I originally took him to a minute clinic in a CVS, but they wouldn't take him due to being close to closing time. The computer kiosk didn't mention an age minimum, but I left before I would have gotten to see a doctor.

I ended up going to "the little clinic" inside Kroger and was really pleased with the experience. Their minimum age is 18 months.

That CVS kiosk pissed me off because I entered all of the info, and THEN it told me they couldn't take me because of the closing time. I would have been even more pissed if I had waited and then been told by the doctor that they couldn't see me due to DS' age. Seems like they should put that on the very first page before you start entering your information.
  • Ditto @Inkogneetoh‌ about the age requirement at CVS. I wonder if it's a MA thing. If you're near shrewsbury there's a really good clinic that sees kids if you ever need it.

@Maebb‌ I'm sorry he was sick but hopefully it's passed. DS2 just battled a virus with a fever that got up to 104.9 too soon after meds and since we were on vaca and it was the middle of the night we ended up at the ER :(

  • @Maebb -- I know that most of the feedback here was that it wasn't teething with a fever that high, and I'm glad that his fever broke, but I wanted to offer my experience. DS spiked a 103-104 fever with every single tooth. It used to drive me nuts because he was fine, energetic, eating, etc but just hot and he couldn't go to daycare until he'd been fever-free for 24 hours. Let's just say I was thankful for a flexible boss because that was a lot of days out of work. Your little one definitely could have had a virus, especially if this is the first time it's happened, but if the higher fevers are common for him, it very well could be teething-related.

@haleyusf‌, my niece gets high fevers with teething, but it seems like it's not a usual thing.

Did your DS get a fever just when the tooth started popping through? DS has a canine that just broke through the gums.

I don't know - the fever was gone this morning, and hopefully it'll stay gone Mon-Wed since my mom is watching him and I am OOT.
  • @Maebb -- yep, he'd spike the fever like the day before the tooth popped through and it would usually last a couple days. Tylenol was usually able to keep it down around 99-100. We took him to the ped the first couple times all freaked out and then realized that that's just how he teethed.

  • This happened with DD on the last five teeth she cut.  The doctor said it was not teething.  He actually diagnosed her with periodic fever syndrome. But, (knock on wood), she hasn't had a fever in a while and she isn't cutting any teeth.

I think its just viral, because they stick everything in their mouth when teething.  Its scary to see their temps that high (DD would get to 104-105, but with meds it would come down and she was fine).

  • This happens to us late week. First time it was just a temp 102-103, his ears and throat looked good, very very light rash on his belly so they said viral. Second time I took him in for it he did have strep. So it might be nothing but it's hard to say. As long as someone can take him in if he gets worse and he's acting alright, I would go

Fwiw he is also cutting teeth and that's what I thought it was until I took him in the second time, just to be safe
