Clogged Duct

So, I woke up this morning with a terribly clogged duct. I've had numerous before (oversupply issues from the start) but have always been able to get them unclogged with heat, massage and frequent nursing. My worst one before this I had to use a large comb in the shower to get it out.

My problem today is this - DS won't nurse on the clogged side (has never happened before). I've tried pumping and nothing is coming out regardless of massage and compressions. I can't tell the breast is full but can't get any movement. So far, hand expressing has been minimal as well. I've taken a hot bath, tried a comb in the shower, heat and massage applied.

Anyone else have tips for clogs? And especially when DS won't nurse? I hate to only feed him on the other side and end up with major oversupply there as well as not be able to get the clog loose. He's always been so good about getting them out for me before!!

Re: Clogged Duct

  • This might sound freaky, but could you get your SO to suck it out? I've had several clogged ducts and this worked for us on one of the stubborn ones.

I know heat is usually prescribed, but my LC told me to ice instead for 5 minutes before pumping or nursing. She also said to take 800 mg of ibuprofen to help relieve the inflammation. Both have worked for me to get some relief at least until the duct will dislodge.
I'm sorry you're going through this. I hope you get some relief soon.
  • I have horrible trouble with plugged ducts. I take ibuprofen like pp suggested and then I use heat, like the hottest heat I can tolerate, for 20 minutes and then I pump on all fours (over a towel because messy).

    GL mama!
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • Thank you all for the suggestions!! Between trying some different nursing positions, ibuprofen, and a mix of all of my other attempts things are starting to clear up. Still a lot of tenderness and some stubborn thick spots but I think I am through the worst.

@Bookshelves‌ hope your day has brought you some relief as well!

So glad to hear you got some relief. Those stubborn ones are horrible.
  • I had to pump in shower to help release the clog. Might be worth a try
  • Dangle feed, works every time for us!
  • Also, I take lecithin daily to help prevent them.

  • @bookshelves I can't dangle feed either - boobs too big! LO was batting them away screaming. She is without a doubt traumatized. I tried a few more times because desperate, but nope.

Sorry to the ladies with clogged ducts today, solidarity nod. They suck.

This is me too! And if bra-less, DS stares at the other boob in fear. Like it's going to suddenly smack him in the face. Wait, that is what happened. Sorry E!
