I will call the doctor if I get seriously concerned or if he starts having other weird symptoms, but just wanting to get some thoughts and opinions -
DS never really "acts" sick, like he's always running around, wanting to play, etc. Yesterday evening DH thought he felt hot, and he had a temp of 103. He was still eating fine, normal diapers, energetic, etc., but a temp like that is concerning, so I took DS to the minute clinic.
They looked in his ears, mouth, felt his lymph nodes, listened to his breathing, and did a strep test, and all that came back normal, so it pretty much rules out an ear infection, strep, or a bad respiratory problem. The doctor said it's most likely viral.
DS' temp has remained high but controlled if we alternate Tylenol and Advil. This afternoon we waited about 4 hours after the last dose of Tylenol, and his temp was back up to 102.
I've already arranged for my mom to watch DS Mon - Wed because I have to go OOT for a work trip, but I feel bad leaving him and am afraid that maybe he'll get worse or something else is wrong. DH will be here too, but he has to work and has some anxiety issues when DS is sick.
Could it be teething? His canine teeth are coming through, but idk if that could cause such high temps. I just checked his temp at 10 after giving him infant Advil at 9pm, and it was back to 98.7, but I am just worried about him.
Re: High temp (102-103) for 18mo old
"The Little Clinic" was great, zero wait, and I checked in with a person instead of a kiosk. I will definitely go back there if we have another urgent care need.
The doctor said to alternate Tylenol and Advil, monitor him, and take him to the ER if his temp exceeds 104, so that's what we've been doing.
This past may, my DS (now 17 months) spiked a fever (between 102-104) and ended up having a febrile seizure from it. We of course had him rushed to the children's hospital, but they ended telling us its most likely a virus and to control the fever with tylenol/motrin and follow up with the pedi. 2 days after that he was still running a fever, so they ended up treating with antibiotics fora sinus infection. The fever broke a day or 2 after that.
Sorry that was long winded...fevers suck. I hope your little guy feels better soon.
@Inkogneetoh, I originally took him to a minute clinic in a CVS, but they wouldn't take him due to being close to closing time. The computer kiosk didn't mention an age minimum, but I left before I would have gotten to see a doctor.
I ended up going to "the little clinic" inside Kroger and was really pleased with the experience. Their minimum age is 18 months.
@Maebb I'm sorry he was sick but hopefully it's passed. DS2 just battled a virus with a fever that got up to 104.9 too soon after meds and since we were on vaca and it was the middle of the night we ended up at the ER
Did your DS get a fever just when the tooth started popping through? DS has a canine that just broke through the gums.
I don't know - the fever was gone this morning, and hopefully it'll stay gone Mon-Wed since my mom is watching him and I am OOT.
This happened with DD on the last five teeth she cut. The doctor said it was not teething. He actually diagnosed her with periodic fever syndrome. But, (knock on wood), she hasn't had a fever in a while and she isn't cutting any teeth.
I think its just viral, because they stick everything in their mouth when teething. Its scary to see their temps that high (DD would get to 104-105, but with meds it would come down and she was fine).
