nighttime potty training question

DD has been wearing underwear to bed for 3 months now, accident free. Until the last two nights. Is it normal to regress? Should I put her back in a pull up at night? Or set an alarm and make her go in the middle of the night? In the past she has gotten me up when she needs to go, but now she seems to be sleeping through the urge. We always go right before bed, I'm not sure what to do since she had done so well with it for so long.

Re: nighttime potty training question

  • I would try to cut off liquids a couple of hours before bedtime.  She just might be having a growth spurt or sleeping more soundly.  I'm not of fan of waking them in the middle of the night because then the bladder doesn't learn to hold it all night long.

  • My kids always started wetting at night in summer as they would drink more throughout the day. Ditto stop liquids earlier, but she is still rally young. I would not wake her at night. If she continues to wet at night I would just put her back in a pull up for a bit until she gets it again. My son potty trained really early but did not stay dry at night until 4.5

  • Thanks for the replies, I hadn't even thought about a growth spurt. We will try cutting fluids earlier, if that doesn't help I might get some cloth training pants to save from doing laundry. Hopefully just a fluke for her.

  • With our LO, we don't try to wake him up in the middle of the night, it usually takes 3 hours to get him back to sleep.  We would rather just do the extra laundry.

  • We layer fitted sheets with waterproof pads, which makes it easy to change the sheets in the middle of the night.

Don't go back to pull ups. Some regression is normal. DD tends to wet the bed if she's mega tired or sick, but otherwise wakes up to pee.
