Trying to Get Pregnant

Can you help set me straight on OPKs?

I'm waiting on my copy of TCOYF to come in, so that may help. Until then, can you try to help?

So I have a big bunch of WONDFOs. When do I start using them? Right after my period? And what about the smiley face ones? Do I use them at all? If so, when?

I'll be temping as well and I think I have a handle on that so far. I get my IUD on Tuesday, so I'm trying to get everything straight beforehand.

I did 3 months of temping practice with my IUD and the average was 27 days. But I've been on some type of hormanal BC for 10 years. So I can't even begin to guess what my new normal will be.

  • Why do you say that? Not questioning your advice, just want to learn how you arrived at that. Is it just an estimation of a certain number of days before suspected O?

  • Pretty much. The official suggestion is usually shortest cycle minus longest LP is your starting date. If you have that info, you can go with that. Otherwise cycle average minus 16 is usually safe.

That's a pretty cool formula. Thank you!

  • I'm not even sure what they are. I've just seen them mentioned here the last couple of days.

I second WCIBN's suggestion on cd 10-11. I came off bc late August, and I started using opks on cd 11-12.

The Wondfo's are cheap enough that you can start early and use often. My thought process was its better to start earlier and possibly catch my surge than to wait and miss it.

  • PP had good advice. For me, I start Wondfo OPK and CBDA (Clear Blue Digital Advanced - smiley face ones) on CD10, since I'm not sure around when, or if, I will O. Just a heads up CBDA can get pricey, if you shop online and get the 20 count, that is the best deal I've found. Once you get a feel for when you O, you can use them more sparingly.

What do you use the CBDA for? Just a back up for the Wondfo?

Sorry, I meant the smiley face ones. I have the ones you linked!

  • Personally, I would just use one or the other. If you're temping, I don't see the need to use two kinds of OPKs unless you suspect a bad batch. I've always used Wondfos and been very happy with them. Plus they're cheap!
