Babies: 9 - 12 Months

11 mo self-weaning

DS was BFing aroudn 4x day when he turned 11 mo.  He was very much the BFing to sleep baby and I thought I'd have trouble ever weaning him.  9Around 11 mo 1 wk, he dropped it to about 2x - once in the evening and once in the morning.  He even started taking naps without BFing and he just went right down.

I was ok with the drop thinking some is better than nothing.  I also started giving him a little milk a mealtime which didn't interfere with his BFing.   There was no way he was going to take formula.  He couldn't even get past the smell of it.

For the past few days he started rejecting me at night and this morning he was willing to BF but there was no big let down.  I'm sure my supply has tanked but I know I am still making milk.

I haven't pumped for 6 months and I really don't want to start now. It would take almost until he was 1 to get a suppy up.

If he totally weans slightly before 1, is there any major problem?  I mean does he drop a few IQ points - j/k lol.

All this said, I am very happy I made it to over 11 mo BFing.  I thought I'd have more of a problem weaning him than this.

  • According to my SIl, my nephew did the same thing.  One day, he was just done.  I'm sure you  are close enough to 1 year to not worry about it - but you could always double check with your pedi if you want reassurance.
