Kegels?

Are you doing them? STMs, did you do them and, if so, what are your thoughts?

I just read in What to Expect that they "help your vagina snap back more gracefully" after pregnancy. I'd personally love to have a gracefully snapping vagina by the new year.

Also, any pointers on technique? I think I'm getting it about right, but sometimes I feel like my butt is doing all the work and my vagina is kind of being lazy.

  • All the time! And before pregnancy, too. It's part of your core muscles and helps to support your lower back.

  • I do them almost every day. You can have any variation of reps and time that you hold the kegel for. For example, sometimes I do a set of 10 kegels and try to hold them for like 20 seconds each. Other times I'll do 30-40 kegels that I just hold for 3-5 seconds. Other times I'll do 20-30 and hold for 10 seconds. You can change it up and it all helps your muscles get stronger.

I did them religiously with DS and after he was born as well and had no issues. However, I haven't been as good about them this time around and definitely can tell the difference. I need to get more serious about them and do more sets on an everyday basis.

  • I'm doing them now. Thanks for the reminder.

Usually I don't. And I pee myself every 14 seconds.

  • God. I keep forgetting to do this business. I'll never remember, but doing them during brushing of the teeth sounds like a good idea.

  • Really appreciate the pointers, ladies. Helpful to know what it's supposed to feel like. Would like to avoid the sniss phase if at all possible.

Going to try to associate Kegels with other daily habits so I don't forget. I like the toothbrushing plan. It also occurred to me this may be a good way to multitask during boring meetings, as long as I can make sure my face doesn't look funny while I do them.

And I'm sure DH won't mind if I practice on him.

  • I have an app on my phone that's a kegal trainer. It reminds me 3 times a day to do them, and then takes you through a 1-2 minute routine. It's different each time so you don't get bored.

@NavyFlyer What's the name of the app?

  • I did them constantly when I was pregnant with my first baby. All the exercise really helped me with delivery too! I had an epidural so things were pretty numb and I was terrified of being a "pooper". I was really able to control my pushing and prevent it and the doctors and nurses were even shocked at how in control I was if pushing... I totally think it was because of all my kegels!
  • I do kegels whenever I hear or see the word kegels hahaha

  • I try to remember and then I forget and go days without doing them. When I remember I often do them while at my desk working. I think though I use my abs partially. I understand the motion but my stomach still seems to go in a bit when I tighten. So hope I'm doing it right, but we'll see. The during sex is a good idea, but I'm usually way too excited myself to think about it until well, it's too late :).

  • I do them pregnant or not. I say it's just like any other muscle and you should work it regularly. I don't know about snapping back any faster/better...

  • I always forget until someone reminds me. That said, thank you for reminding me.

I, too, would love a snapping vagina after all is said and done. That lifting of the pelvic floor muscles is the same thing as holding your pee for dear life. :)

  • I have been doing them every time I come back to this thread.

  • I think I'm just going to start a new discussion once a week, called KEGELS KEGELS KEGELS to remind us. Would that be annoying?

LOL - so if I am doing that - holding my pee for dear life when I'm out and about and don't have time to stop for a bathroom - does that count as one long kegel for the day
    :))
