Heartbeat VS Placenta?

edited June 2014 in 2nd Trimester
I'm wondering if baby were to no longer have a heartbeat, would you still get a doppler reading of 130-140? Could those be readings be arteries, placenta, etc....or is that definitely baby's heartbeat?

Re: Heartbeat VS Placenta?

  • What? If a heart stops beating then there is no more blood flowing through a body, therefore no arteries pumping anything, so no.

Are you dopplering yourself? Are you concerned for your baby? Why is this a question?

So you're telling me that if my baby's heart stop beating that MY OWN arteries that are very easily heard on a Doppler will stop too, essentially killing me? No. I'm not looking for a question to my question, I'd like an answer. I'm a FTM and PRETNATAL wise, don't know much about the process.

Whether I'm concerned for my own baby, someone else's, etc...not relevant.

MorseBrooks  cool, thanks! Yea, I have a home Doppler and so does a friend of mine. With the both of us we get the same readings on our home Doppler as we do at the dr office so we're just curious. Also picking up my own arteries that read about 110-120.  It seems pretty consistent but I know that you can pick up a somewhat high reading from the placenta as well. Just wondered! Thanks again

  • My understanding is the placenta and the fetal heart beat sound different. The average person may not notice this but someone who is experienced at listening to fetal heart tones would.

Your arteries should not be giving a heart rate of 130-140.  That is extremely dangerous in an adult and you would probably be showing other symptoms as well to indicate that you were not ok.

And I just remembered where I knew your SN - you're back eh?  Still full of sunshine and rainbows I see.....

She didn't say anything about which body, merely pointed out that if "A" heart stops beating - no more blood flow through "A" body - so if baby's heart has stopped - you wouldn't be able to find it's heart rate.  Your heart rate should be fairly easy to recognize, especially if you know your heart rate - it will be way slower.

Her questions were also valid, as I was wondering them as well.

=))  This board...kills me every time. I never left, just didn't respond or feel the need to post much since things seem to be going smoothly so far. Glad I'm noticed and remembered though :D

& no...her comment & questions were not helpful in the least.

I feel like my initial response was on point to the vague post you wrote out. I'm sorry you don't like my questions, but they came from a place of genuine concern. Now that you've posted more, I can honestly say that you should probably just put that Doppler down since you clearly don't know how to use it. Perhaps take it along to your doctor and ask for instructions if you're going to continue to use it at home.

Edited to add, your own heart rate of 110-120 is also too high, the average resting heart rate of a pregnant woman is 80-100 bpm.
  • My doctor proved to me with the first Doppler reading that it was my baby's by putting it over my stomach where she is, then over another part of my stomach where my artery is. They sounded very different. You should hear a big difference. Plus depending on how far along you are, you can hear the baby move around. The second time the doctor did it for me, she was moving around like crazy and you could hardly hear the heartbeat because it was picking up her movements.

I wouldn't want to be remembered for overreacting and having a poor attitude, but if that floats your boat, so be it. Once again you have freaked out at someone over nothing. I'd suggest using Google instead of forums if you don't want interaction and conversation with your answers.
