HI everyone!
LO is 8months old and still nursing 8plus times in a 24 hour period. He wakes one to two times during the night, nurses for 10min and is back out until the next feeding.
I start school in late August and they don't have anywhere that I can pump and he will be on the other side of campus so I can't feed him directly. There is also only a ten minute gap between my classes for me to do anything. My first class starts at 10 ends at 12 then the next one starts at 12:10 and ends at 4:25.
Any experience with this? Or any advice for me? I called up the school and got bounced around because no one had any information. One person said to do it in the bathroom but they usually are not clean and I'd prefer not to handle his stuff in there. Yeah, so I'm getting really worried about this. Thanks in advance!
Re: Need advice about going back to school and nursing.
I'm not sure what to do about the schedule, apart from pumping before and after the block, though.
Will you be driving your own vehicle to school? If so, you can buy a plug for the car, or you could use a battery pack that a lot of pumps come with. I'd contact the Dean or maybe the student counseling center and find out if there is a place you can pump. Tell them the restroom is out of the question. Perhaps a professor would be willing to let you use their space for a short time (maybe a teacher that teaches womens studies or something- I dont know, just throwing ideas out there of who might be the most helpful) or maybe there is a spot in the counseling office you could use for 30 minutes. Maybe contact the student health facility on campus, if there is one, maybe they have a room you could use.
If there is absolutely nothing you can find, then just be sure to be nursing LO the moment you drop off (maybe at the daycare center) and the moment you pick up (again at the daycare center.) How many days a week will you be attending class? If it's not every day, you *might* only have a small dip in supply if you don't remove the milk from your breasts for a 7 hour period, but you will definitely have a dip.
I changed jobs at 8 months and went from having an office that was only shared about 20% of the time (and in which case I went to my car to pump), to being in a cubicle with no lacatation room at all. I was persistent about having a pumping space and got brave about asking other moms in the company if I could use their office when they were out of town traveling, etc. It wasn't easy, and most definitely not ideal, but we kept going strong and I successfully pumped to a year.
You can do this!!! Good luck!!!
