2nd Trimester

Coughing up lots of phlem

In almost 16 weeks preggo and since week 10 I have been coughing up phlem n I gag on it. Dr recommended me to take Claritin and a cough medicine. What do you take?

Re: Coughing up lots of phlem

  • When I was pg I was cleared to take mucinex plain (no DM or anything like that). Claritin (again regular) & mucinex together helped. You can get a saline spray. Wash out your nostrils three times a day. Gargle hot salt water too.

    As always water water water!

  • I only had one cold in my pregnancy and it was very early on in the 1stT. I sneeze a lot though now and have sometimes a mucus backup in my sinuses so I rinse with saline solution. I haven't taken any cold medication, because I've been too afraid of it. But I did take cough drops every once in a while if I couldn't handle my cough. If it's a cold, just sleep lots and your body will hopefully be able to fight it off. And don't forget about vitamin C, but you're probably already taking enough.

    Feel better love!

  • I woke up stuffy on Thursday. Lots of phlem in the mornings. Been thinking it was allergies & taking benedryl, which is only helping mildy - so now I'm thinking it may be a mild cold after all (don't know why I thought otherwise - I have always been prone to summer colds). Anyway, I'm sending DH out for a saline nasal spray tonight. If I wake up still feeling gross, I'll call my doctors 24-hour line and post back here with what they recommend.
