Sleep Questions...thoughts please!

Up until the last week or so, LO was doing well sleeping in his pnp (bassinet top), or his bassinet in our room. This last week especially he has only been napping when DH and I are holding him. When we put him down, he sleeps maybe 20 minutes. He is very fussy and I think it might be becuase he is overtired. Any thoughts on how to get him to sleep in the pack and play or bassinet?? Thanks!

  • DS is the same. He sleeps soundly in his carrier, when I put him down I get maybe half an hour of him sleeping so I'll be lurking for suggestions too!

I kinda think its the age, and I read that between 6-8 weeks they begin sleeping on their own, so I'm holding onto that possibility.

  • I noticed that my DS likes to sleep on my chest. I tried laying him on his belly for naps (he is 4 weeks but can turn his head) and he sleeps much better and sometimes naps an hour or 2 like that. Maybe its a comfort thing?
  • I should add i lay him on his belly in the bassinet.
  • This seems to be a thing they go through. Our LO used to have great naps in her swing during the day but for the last week or so, has been resisting sleep unless someone holds her. She also wakes up when we put her down, no matter where it is. No issues at night, though. She 's 4 weeks old. I don't know what to tell you other than wait it out for now.

We had that problem from about 4-6 weeks. He will be 8 weeks on Wednesday and now he's beginning to sleep on his own when I put him down. There is hope I think it is just a growth spurt hang in there!
  • We do: nights in PNP, day naps on Mommy's chest, big evening nap in his crib. It's been suggested that I'm highly neurotic, but I feel like the babies learn what KIND of sleep to have based on where they are.

For instance, for myself:I don't nap in my bed- I sleep in my bed. I nap on te couch. My body knows if I'm sleeping on the couch, I should only sleep for about an hour or less.

    Make sense?

    Perhaps I am neurotic.
  • DS will be 5 weeks Tuesday and does the exact same thing. Last night was the worst night yet with the crying and screaming due to being overtired. He wakes up as soon as you put him down or will only sleep 30 minutes unless he's in mine or DHs arms. I'm trying to work on a schedule with him now to try and get better naps for a better night. The problem is he can't soothe himself back to sleep and wakes up easily. I've borrowed a swing from my SIL and he'll be sleeping in it for both naps and nighttime with a sound machine to get through this. FTM here so I'm trying to figure it all out as well. Supposedly this age is a "mental leap" according to Wonder Weeks. This too shall pass...

  • My favorite trick is swaddling in a t-shirt of yours that you've worn all day or have sweat in at least a little bit. If it's heavy with your scent you can make them think they're close to you and it'll comfort them. It could also be a temperature thing because my first would sleep only if he was in a light blanket and a onesie with the fan on low and she prefers to be bundled up and warm. Even at this age I notice they'll start letting you know what they like and don't like really fast especially about sleeping arrangements. Just make a checklist of things that could be bothering LO and go down the list.

Even to this day my first will go insane if you try to put him to sleep and he's too hot....haha

  • I am having similar issues, DS used to take naps in the cribs for the first couple weeks. This past week he has been waking up within a couple minutes of putting him down. He will still nap in his swing a little and nights in his napper in the pnp are fine, but every time I try and put him in the crib he wakes back up. I am just getting to the point it will be just me and him since DH is back at work and the last of out of town family is heading home and I am nervous about leaving him in the swing to shower and do chores, but I can't hold him all the time either. He is 5 weeks today so glad to see this is something that he just may be going through.

DS is 5 weeks and was really good sleeping in his crib or PNP but the past couple of days he'll only sleep in his swing. We're letting him but trying to get him back in the crib so it doesn't become a pattern. I'm hear it gets better after 6 weeks.

  • We've been having the same issue with our son at night. He really likes sleeping on his belly and I do that during the day when I'm supervising him. But at night he doesn't want to sleep on his own even when swaddling so my husband has been putting him in bed with us and we get the most amount of sleep that way. As soon as we transfer him into his napper he's crying in 15 min. I'm going to try the tshirt trick and see if that works. Hopefully at 6-8 weeks things will change.
  • B sleeps in rnp and does great at night her day naps suck and are nonexistent unless swaddled and not overtired. I've been trying to transition to the crib for naps... Not going well.
  • equestrianmom!

I am trying to transition DS into his basket in his room for day time naps (he's going to his own room at night in a couple-few weeks), and I just put a shirt on him and he's asleep! I just nursed him and put him in bed (like at night) rather than the carrier first and then into bed.

I'm glad to have read this. My guy is 4 weeks old tomorrow and we're entering this phase I think. Up until now, we've had good luck with him sleeping 2-3 hours in his crib, even putting him down while still awake. Last night he didn't sleep well at all. I don't think we got more than an hour at a time. That combined with bad gas pains makes for tired baby and mama.
