Day napping

My 5 week old is an. Amazing night sleeper 8-10 hours w one Mnf . However; her day naps are touch n go. 20 min here and there and she's totally miserable by bedtime and I'm frustrated. How many naps should she be taking during the day and approximately how long??

Re: Day napping

  • I'm in the same boat. DD wakes around 8 and will eat every 2 hours during the day. So by the time she eats, has a diaper change, and a little bit of awake time, she might only get a 20-30 minute nap before it's time to start all over again. We can't usually get her down for the night until 11pm (some nights later) but then she sleeps through the night until she's up at 8 to start a new day.

I wouldn't mind so much except for the fact that she's pretty fussy by night time but just will not go down. I've tried waking her earlier in the hopes she'll go to bed earlier, but that plan backfired.

At least we're all getting good sleep at night. She's 7 weeks so we still have some time before we really have to worry about sleep training. For now this routine is working for us.

I hope you find something that works for you too!

  • Have her naps always been bad or just turned? My daughter was doing awesome day naps and then the last couple days all crap cat naps. Then I realized she's going through her 6 wk growth spurt. You're getting close to that, thought I'd hrow that out there if it's a new nap trend? I am praying that's the reason for our short naps and I can get her back to a couple longer ones!

  • She's actually 6 weeks today my kinds still foggy and the 31 day thing messes me up.... I'm thinking growth spurt. Today she actually took 2 1 1/2 hour naps... Definitely less fussy but we'll see if she still sleeps just as well through the night. Fingers crossed! Thanks ladies!
  • Same boat.

Sleep from 9-730. Eat and play until 1130-12.

Sleeps in carrier from 1130-4, may wake once to feed and change.

Eat, play and bath (mostly eat though) until 9.

I put Ds in the carrier at 1130-12 regardless if I've seen the tired signs yet. Because if 1 hits and he hasn't sleet I have a cranky babe on my hands.
  • 2-3 hour awake, nap for 1-2 hours. Repeat for 12 hour span, then begin nighttime routine.

Same boat here. DS is 5 weeks and for the last few days he has been really crappy at taking day naps. He's fine in the morning but after about 11.30am he's awake for hours, maybe takes a 30min nap some time in the afternoon but thats it. He's really fussy and grouchy in the evening but then when he does finally go to sleep will stay that way for 5-6 hours. I've tried everything to get him to take a longer afternoon nap, tight swaddle, dark room, white noise, paci, rocking etc.. nothing seems to work he just wants to be awake. I'm hoping this is just a phase
  • Let me also interject my rookie FTM mistake when I had my first 12 years ago-

I spent all of his awake time rocking him and keeping things dark, and basically trying to get him to sleep. So he never slept. After the pediatrician asked me how I stimulated him during his awake time, I understood.

When baby is awake, try and directly stimulate them for about two hours. Have music play, keep them in front of a window, read to them, etc. At the two hour mark, try and get them to go to sleep. They will sleep well with this schedule because they are not overtired, but their little brains were stimulate enough to need an REM cycle to recover while forming those new synapses.
  • So. Instead of putting DS in the carrier for his second nap round, I put him in his basket in his room (blinds closed, window and door is open though) ... so far still asleep!

He's such a nosey rosey. Maybe that is why he never slept during the day, he was always in the room with us and we we're moving and making noise (since its day) - so it was too stimulating.

Hmmm ... I might be onto something. Nobody jinx it!
