Bottle recommendations

First of all, sorry if this topic has been posted and discussed. I'm going on 3 hrs of sleep the last few nights and am mobile, so it's hard to scroll back through.

I EBF, but am trying to pump more. I was using the Medela bottles that came with my pump and DS sucks so hard the nipples are destroyed. I just tried Avent but he was choking and gagging with that nipple. Any other suggestions?

Also, he will not take a bottle from me yet. I'm assuming this is pretty normal. I tried yesterday and he looked at me and cried. But took it immediately from DH. I'm not complaining, I like my nursing time with him.

Re: Bottle recommendations

  • How old is he? Does he like the medela bottle? If so, maybe just buy replacement nipples. Is he destroying them because the flow is too slow?

  • I'm not sure if he likes the bottle. He'll be 5 weeks tomorrow.
I'm guessing the flow is too slow, so what are other nipple options with a more moderate flow?

  • @anniemore thanks!
This is helpful! Just curious why you prefer the glass bottles?

  • J is using the MAM bottom-vent bottle. My LC recommended it as the only bottle her daughter liked. Very sturdy construction and is self contained to microwave sterilize (put it together a certain way a nuke for 2:30). Our reflux guy has very few issues with it.
  • We use Dr. Browns glass bottles. Dd gets a bottle of BM at night from DH. She takes it fine. We go back and forth between boob, bottle nipple and Soothie just fine since 2.5 weeks.

  • We were using Tommy Tippee (sp?) bottles, after we tried and failed with Avent. Now we are using Dr. Brown's bottles because my LO spits up a lot. We have really noticed the decrease in bit, messy spitting up since we switched.

Ours are just the BPA free plastic kind.

  • Had a huge problem with the madela bottles/nipples. She developed a bad latch as well as a lot if fussiness and gas. We switched to Tommee Tippee and Born Freea d it's been 100% better. I only use the madela bottles with caps for BM storage when I pump. Born Free makes glass bottles too.

  • I recently bought medela bottles that are 8oz bottles with a medium flow nipple. I'm saving them because it says for 4-6 months but it can be used with the pump. You could try those. Not sure if they sell just the nipple. FYI BRU has a coupon going around for a free dr. Brown bottle with $10 purchase. It is a bigger bottle but this will be my 2nd free bottle and I know they are usually pretty expensive

Tomme tippee here as well. While we were in the hospital he was given a nuk but i prefer the closer to nature one. We're at a point now where LO will get a bottle from me as well and he is sucking very smoothly. I love them!
  • PSA for Canadian Moms: Walmart.ca has 3-packs of 4oz Dr. Brown's bottles on clearance for $15. I think they are normally arounf $8-9 each, so for $5 a bottle that's a good deal!

I think shipping is free right now, and some stores have them on clearance too, if they are in stock.

  • Playtex vent aire are awesome and their drop ins! My LO has colic and reflux and the slow flow nipples have been awesome and totally reduced it all! We trie every other bottle including the Tommee tippee and nope the nipples are too fast.
  • I use dr. Browns and medela bottles but LO will literally eat anything lol I also used an avent bottle I got for free but I didn't like it.
  • We had good luck with the Playtex Drop-Ins, but buying the liners is kind of a pain.

  • In know Avent has two different types. I breast feed and use the avent natural which is supposed to be more like the breast and easier to transition to for baby.
Not sure which Avent you used so I just wanted to suggest it.

We're doing to try the Kiinde system. I hope it works; it has very good reviews online. I'm going to try pumping this week. GL!

  • We use the glass Born Free bottles and the MAM newborn nipples. The flow mimics the breast and it's much easier than any other nipple we tried.
  • I would try moving to a medium flow nipple before investing in new bottles. We use the Medela ones. They are on their second kid and we all really like them. Plus I can pump right into them. Bonus.

  • Playtex vent aire. We had the same issues as far as destroying the medela nipples and avent being too fast. The playtex vent aire actually have a similar nipple to the medela it's just a bit bigger base.
