Food Aversions- Help please!

Most of my first trimester symptoms have disappeared, but my aversion to vegetables is going strong. I really want to eat healthy but vegetables just nauseate me. By the way this is just since I got pregnant. Besides peas (yuk), I used to love vegetables! Any suggestions?

  • Could you hide them in things to mask the flavor? I do that with things like spinach and mushrooms a lot of my boys. Also they sell different juices and stuff that contain full servings of veggies.

  • I have no help for you I have an aversions to all food it seems like. Especially if I have to smell it cooking. The only thing I can seem to stomach is frozen blueberries. Good luck!
  • Put cheese sauce on them. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and velveeta covers all sins.

Or try pickled veggies. We make dilled carrots and green beans every year when we make pickles. I think you should be able to find them in stores.

  • I'd recommend smoothies with kale. Jamba Juice has a smoothy with kale, chia and greek yogurt in it, its actually pretty enjoyable. Or the naked smoothies...even though they're all mostly fruit and sugar.

    Hidden veggie pasta?

Have you tried sauteed spinach or kale with some butter, salt, and pepper? The idea kinda turned me off at first but when DH made those for me I turned into a ravenous beast.
  • I had this aversion my entire first pregnancy.  It was awful.  I used a lot of the methods listed here, especially smoothies and "hiding" veggies in other dishes (spinach lasagna is amazing!)

  • Thanks! I have tried the fruit/vegetable juices that are supposed to have a full serving of veggies. The smoothie idea sounds good.

I am not sure if I can hide then in things because just the thought of eating them makes me sick. Maybe if someone else cooks it? Thanks for the ideas!

  • I think veggies with cheese is a good idea. Maybe even a pasta with Alfredo sauce and hide veggies in it that way. I eat veggies but not as many as I wish I did. I know what you mean about eating them before pregnancy. I used to love them.
  • I've been dealing with the same problem and I was vegan before pregnancy so veggies were my thing! I've just been trying to eat fruits and whatever I can keep down. Soups are a great way to sneak in veggies, especially if they are in a creamier base like chowder or stew. Also, you can bake them into breads like zucchini or carrot breads. I can sometimes get salads down if the dressing is fantastic, so maybe search out a really yummy dressing? I've been reassured by several fellow vegans who turned into complete carnivores during pregnancy that it's just something to go through and you will make it through. Even if you aren't able to eat tons of veggies for 9 months, there are plenty of people to live their entire lives that way and you'll pick it back up once LO makes his/her appearance.

  • I swear by green smoothies and green juice. I have problems with meat a lot so every morning I either have a smoothie with berries Greek yogurt and a ton of spinach or I make green juice. There are TONS of combinations using all different kinds of veggies and fruits and they are YUMMY. It really has helped me a lot.
  • Veges are still a problem for me also, I can tell it's slowly fading as of lately, I can do carrots, corn on the cobb and last week Brussel sprouts sounded good. I do the green smoothie daily (helps a ton with being regular also)
Hopefully, the food aversions will get better for you in the next couple week!

Veggies are a problem for me also! Like pp, I've been hiding them in smoothies, dicing them into small chunks to put in savory soups and stews, and mixing them into pasta sauces and topping them with cheese. It definitely seems to help. Also, have you tried making kale chips? Very easy to make and they satisfy the crunchy, salty craving while getting some extra veggies.

  • I haven't been able to eat raw veggies, but I can eat them if I cook them. I usually love a handful of carrots as a snack, but that has been a no go for a couple months now. There are a bunch of juices on the market that Liz fruits and veggies!
  • I've had the same issue and I'm just starting to incorporate more veggies back into my meals at 15 weeks. I'm vegan, so an aversion to vegetables was particularly challenging! Like PPs have said, I'm finding green smoothies and smooth veggie soups are working. Other than that, I just listen to my gut! Usually if something sounds good, it'll stay put. Good luck!! I hope your veggie aversions go away soon! :)

ETA: I guess I'm thinking the same as everyone else..... But: Make or buy smoothies that mask your greens. You can throw spinach into just about any fruit smoothie and have no taste of it. I've been doing spinach, pineapple, banana and ginger. Swap in kale if that's your kind of thing.

Also, try sweeter veggies like sweet potatoes and carrots. I found that cucumber dipped in ranch got me through some rough patches.

  • I've had vegetable aversions too, predominately to broccoli and potato, which is weird because they were my favorite pre-pregnancy. I've noticed I can down veggies easier when in a green smoothie when the fruit taste over-powers the veggies. Like this morning, I had a mango tropical smoothie with kale, and it tasted just fine. Maybe try that :)
