Hip Dysplasia

Hi everyone, my little girl was breech until 37 weeks so our doctor sent us for a routine ultrasound of breech babies. The ultrasound came back to show severe hip dysplasia. I would never have known...but now I see that her fat rolls don't line up which is apparently a sign. Anyway...now we are being referred to a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon. I'm glad we use a beco carrier which is good for hips (bjorn type carriers make it worse) but am sad that we have been swaddling since she was born (which also can make it worse). She will start with a harness that holds her legs at a 90 degree angle and I'm hoping this will solve it and she won't need surgery. I know we had other breech babies on the board.....has anyone else received The same results from their ultrasounds? Anyone know anyone with this or have any experience?

Re: Hip Dysplasia

  • Not my dd, but my sister had to be in the brace. It took a few months in it but the brace fixed it completely. It was a pita at the time but she is totally fine today - a great athlete actually!
Praying that works for your LO!

Thanks!! So great to hear these kinds of stories!
  • We have an ultrasound Thursday to find out if our LO has hip dysphasia too.

I hope your results turn out great! Our doctors have said all along that Lilah's hips look great so I really was not prepared for this diagnosis.
My friends son had it and had the brace he is now fine. I'm sorry he and you are going through this.i recommend getting a notebook to write down and help organize everything.

Thank you! That is great advice. I bought a book "parents guide to hip dysplasia" and copied down all of the suggested questions to ask the ortho. I also joined a hip dysplasia forum on baby centre that has helped. The notebook is a great idea for our appointments. Especially to keep things straight for insurance purposes.
  • My LO was frank breech from January through birth (end of march). One of the pediatricians that checked her in the hospital requested an ultrasound because her hips felt so loose. My dd had severe hip dysplasia in her left hip and slight in her right. She was fitted for a Pavlik harness 4 days later. She had to wear it 24/7 for the first 6 weeks and then only at night for 4 more weeks. She went for periodic ultrasounds to monitor the progress. After 10 weeks she no longer had to wear the harness.
Once she turns 6 months we will go for a follow up x-ray to make sure everything remained where it should be. I'm knocking on wood.
The harness is easy to take on and off. The one thing you'll have to get used to is changing your LO's diaper in it. It's no big deal - you just have to weave it through a little.
I hope the best for you and your LO!
  • We didn't have hip dysplacia but we did have club feet, so we spent 6 straight weeks going to the ped Ortho every week for new casts and braces. I agree with making notes the Ortho experience is overwhelming. Also, not sure what your brace looks like or if it's worn over clothes or under, but if it's visible be prepared to explain your story to every new person you see.

Lo knee has been popping for the past month so the pediatrician finally recommended she see an orthopedic surgeon. She can't get in there for another month which is pretty annoying!
  • DD #1 had was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at her 6 month doctors appt. she started in a brace but it didn't work so had a closed reduction and was in a spica cast for 11 weeks. You can read our whole story here: https://mackenzieshipadventures.blogspot.ca/?m=1

  • My SO had severe hip displasia as a baby. He had to wear the brace too and is now completely fine.

Thank you so much. Your blog was very informative! I also saw that you are in Canada as well...I am in calgary so it was great to see a Canadian perceptive on working with our health care system (everything I have read has been from the United States)
