I am sick with worry - toddler hurt her leg

I have an ibert seat for 2 year old DD and we went on a nice bike ride this morning.  When we got home and I went to get her out, her leg got really stuck just as the bike started to fall to the side.  Her leg doesn't look swollen or anything but she doesn't want to walk on it.  When she does, she is a little wobbly.  She keeps saying "momma carry me" and when I ask her where it hurts she points to her kneecap (her knee was right under the handlebars when she got stuck).
She is napping now and I really hope that it's not damaged.  I feel super guilty and terrible.  Today was is my first day off for summer (I'm a teacher) and I was really looking forward to spending the summer with her.  I keep praying it's not broken.  I can't imagine spending the entire summer with a 2 year old in a cast.  Poor thing.  She is a kid who loves to run and climb and she loves to swim and splash in the pool and ocean too so that would be a huge bummer.  My DH says I immediately think of the worst and to relax and wait and see how she is.  I just feel so terrible.  I really hope she's ok.

Re: I am sick with worry - toddler hurt her leg

  • If she still won't put weight on it tomorrow, I'd take her in.  Kids this age break bones more easily than you might think, because their tendons and ligaments are so much stronger than bone.  And it usually takes a lot to get a kid to not walk at all.

We had something similar happen - only there was no accident, just some jumping around, and she wouldn't walk on her leg.  We took her in the next evening when she still wouldn't walk on it, and they x-rayed just in case.  Nothing was wrong (just a sprain, she was fine the next day), but they said that it was absolutely the right thing to do to bring her in.

DD has hurt her leg twice now at gymnastics. When she won't put weight on it or refuses to walk I get nervous and bring her in to the urgent care (the dr there is fantastic with kids). Both times it ended up just being sprains, but it's nice having piece of mind. FWIW the last time DD sprained her leg at gymnastics it was a good 3-4 days before she would put weight on it again. Sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks.

  • Hi Ladies,

I wanted to give an update sooner but I haven't had a chance to come on until now.  After her nap yesterday she wouldn't let me put her down which worried me but by last night she was running around and jumping with no problems.  DH came home from work last night and couldn't even tell which leg she hurt because by then she was walking around fine and putting her full weight on it.

This morning she was dancing around in music class.  She doesn't appear to be limping or walking funny at all.  I'm still a little paranoid (my personality) and I keep watching her but I think she's ok.
