How do you organize....

Your PICTURES?

Seriously, I told myself I was going to be better now that I have a baby and they are all sitting on my computer. Do you print and make albums, photobooks (by month, by year), backup on CDs or flash drive, shutterfly, Dropbox? Help! With baby #2 coming I need to get on it. Thanks, ladies!!!

Re: How do you organize....

  • Their labeled by month, and are on memory cards, and 2 months ago we bought a external hard drive and copied EVERYTHING onto it. Every month we update it. We also have some backed up on thumb drives, but not all (mainly older photos). Our wedding photos are on a CD.

  • I have an alarm on my phone to backup photos on skydrive every Sunday evening. I make a new album every 6 months. That's about all I can manage.

  • Every month I upload to shutterfly into a file with that months name.

Pro tip: label your files (on the computer) YYYY-MM-DD ex: 2014-06-21 and your files will always be in chronological order

  • I save in my pictures on my computer by year and month. They are all backed up onto an external hard drive and onto flash drives which is keep in my safety deposit box.

  • All great suggestions! I need to rename my photos. But do y'all print and put in albums or print photos from sites like shutterfly? Keep the suggestions coming!
  • For Aiden I made him a photo book of his first year. I intended to do one for every year but lost motivation with his year 2 book.  I'm 90% done with Quinn's first year book though.  Let me tell you though - for anyone who hasn't backed up to a website or external hard drive, don't procrastinate.  I did and when Quinn was a newborn Aiden knocked out laptop off the end table, permanently damaging the hardrive.  We couldn't recover anything from it.  We lost close to a year's worth of pictures (some exceptions because there was stuff on FB and some stuff that was still on a memory card but still :()

  • I started putting photos in different files every month of anything that includes L. I did this to make my life easier to make my photobooks. I have Landon 11-12 months for example and any of the photos that do not include him are in seasonal folders. I'm not sure why this works for me but in my crazy brain it just made sense. I will probably start year two with just monthly folders that include everything considering from this point forward I just plan to do a photobook per year that includes all the photos. I also back up to my hard drive every few months, keep them on the very large memory card I purchased, and sometimes put them on H's laptop too just to be sure. I am overly paranoid about losing photos, I just really need to do something about the fact that I keep all of these things in the one location in my house and that will not protect them in the event of a fire, etc.

Also I rarely print any photos unless I have a specific purpose for them, I find it too messy to have prints because I always end up taking them out of the albums. Photobooks all the way for me.
