Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

20 month old sticking hand in poopy diaper

I need ideas on how to get my son to stop sticking his hand in his poopy diaper in the morning. He has been doing it for a few months now, not every day and only first thing in the morning before we get him after bedtime. I've tried making it clear its gross and we don't play with or touch poop. Sometimes i put him in a onesie for pjs and that stops it. I read that it could be a sign hes ready to potty train, is that true? He has been peeing in the potty before bath time since 1 yr old and occasionally he asks to go during the day, but i haven't forced it because i wasn't sure he was really ready. I know its semi normal for toddlers to be curious, but i want it to stop! He knows not to touch it, but does it anyway.

Any help is appreciated! Oh and im expecting DS #2 in about 4 weeks so i don't think now is a good time to start potty training.

  • i don't have any personal experience with this, but can you or your SO try to get in there early enough in the morning that it's before he's pooped, so you can try to sit him on the potty? otherwise i'd just go with onesies, that's easy enough. my 22 month old DS sleeps in them during the summer anyway just because they're cooler.

this article also suggests allowing opportunities for messy play during the day (playdoh, fingerpaint), to help get away from the urge to play with poop:

  • Loading the player...
  • If the onesie stops it, I'd continue with that

and/or try getting up earlier so he has you there to take him out of the crib the second he wakes up rather than being bored for a little while and looking for things to do like explore his diaper.  Like PP suggests, if you can even get there before he poops and can get him on the potty, even better.  I wouldn't look at this as full-blown potty training, but rather a redirection of the morning poop.  I wouldn't worry about potty the rest of the day...

    GL!

  • This definitely means he is reay to be potty trained, since he is obviously getting uncomfortable with having poop in his diaper it will be really motivating to poop in the toilet. It should not take 4 weeks to potty train though. I have a potty trained some of the hardest kids in a week. If you wait to long to potty train him then he is going to resist it more because he will feel that that I one of few things that he can control. So since he's obviously ready right now then it's the best time to do it.
