Collage advice needed

I am due on December 19th, which happens to be the last day of the fall collage semester. Should I sign up for the fall semester knowing that I am due the last day of my finals? I am torn, because I am perfectly capable of going to class now although I know if my baby comes early I might miss my finals week, which will give me an F in all the classes.
Is there anyone that has gone through something like this? Would you go to the fall semester were you in my shoes?

Re: Collage advice needed

  • I would say go for taking the classes just talk with the professors about making up the finals if you give birth prior to finals week or seeing if you could take the finals early.

  • I agree with Wulfgar. Just to be sure could you talk to your academic advisor? I'm sure you aren't the first pregnant student, they could likely offer good advice.

  • Do you have an academic advisor you could talk to? It may be a good idea to discuss options with a staff member before you register, just to know what your options are.

Im due the week before finals week, I am still going to take classes. I would talk to your advisor and the professors of the classes you are going to register for and see if they are willing to work with you.

  • College professors try to be understanding about people's circumstances. Good chance you will be able to either take exams early OR take an incomplete and take the exam after you give birth.
  • Thanks everyone, I think I will make an appointment to talk to my school councilor and academic advisor for Monday. See what options my school has! You ladies have made me feel a whole lot better thank you!
  • I would still take the classes. I highly doubt your professors are going to fail you if you happen to miss a final or two because you were in labor. While I know having a baby before your EDD totally happens, it's much more likely as a FTM that you'll go past your EDD.

Worst case scenario, depending on the professor, you can ask to take it early OR to make it up after the baby is here, though this option would be more challenging considering lack of sleep, possible pain, etc.

  • I am due two weeks after finals but of course its very possible it will happen earlier. Idk how flexible your school is but maybe you can email the professors you want ahead of time and have a plan on when to take the final if the birth conflicts maybe even take it earlier then finals week ? Some professors can be jerks so try to discuss it via email before you pay for their class and miss out on other classes...

I was in college when I was pregnant with my first. Definitely talk with the professors face to face. I wasn't due till after classes ended but I was so sick and was hospitalized several times and they were so much more understanding and willingly to work with me because they knew upfront. If they will work with you definitely sign up. Classes are so much easier when pregnant than with a newb.

Aw, I was all excited to give crafting advice.

I got a deferment for a similar reason. Talking to your department or an advisor will help. Don't worry, you are probably not even the only one doing so this semester. They've handled it before. A friend of mine missed her finals week because she gave birth and that just meant she had to work with each prof to take them at the beginning of the next semester. If you are in good standing, no one will outright fail you for something that is clearly a medical need.

I am in the exact same boat!  I have an appointment with an advisor next week to discuss my options, among other things.  Im worried it will be a bit harder for me because the class I want to take is Anatomy and Physiology.  Along with a written final, we also have to take a lab practicum at the end of the semester, which is much harder, if not impossible, to try and make up.  I hope it works out for you, because I know trying to work school into the mix will only be harder once our little ones are actually here. Keep us posted!

I'm in the same boat except I'm due 12/1 which is about 2-3 weeks before finals. I registered already but am still considering if I will be going or not. I will email the teachers ahead of time to see what they say because I know giving an incomplete is up to the professors discretion. Taking the semester off is still an option for me though. I'm a FTM and I just don't know how I'll feel when the time comes and I'll have to commute on the NYC subway when I'm a lot bigger. :-/
