The days seem so long!

FTM here with a 6 week old and I'm having a really difficult time adjusting to my new life. The days just seem so very long. LO does not usually nap well so I feel like I'm holding/rocking/walking/feeding/playmat/swing all day but it drags so badly. She only stays in her swing for about 10 mins max before she cries so it's very short lived.

I'm EBF and don't feel comfortable nursing in public at all so when I do go out it's only for about an hour.
I know I should just get over the BF in public thing but I just can't.

I just feel sort of trapped by this new life. Wondering what you ladies do to make your day go by. There is only so much tv I can watch.

Re: The days seem so long!

  • Have you tried pumping yet? If you don't feel comfortable NIP then maybe you could pump and bring a bottle along to get out more. I think seeing other people and goung out is the key to not feeling trapped and like life with baby is monotonous
  • Loading the player...
  • I agree getting out and visiting with people. It can get very lonely and boring with just you and baby 24/7
  • I also am not comfortable yet with nursing in public but am comfortable going to close friends' homes. I just excuse myself to go nurse baby. I am getting more comfortable the more I go out. Better figure it out by next weekend because we are flying!
  • I downloaded a tv series that my hub isn't interested in so I watch 1-2 episodes a day. My daughter only is content if being held and me standing and on the move so I find "my" guilt pleasure tv show helps pass some time why I stand and bounce in the living room:)

I also baby wear almost all day. She naps and then I go for a walk, or walk around the house and catch up on phone calls. I also have made a big list of things I can do while baby wearing. Here are some list examples: create DS1's baby book, write thank yous, pay bills, clean out purse, update address book, clean house (I usually do a whole house pick up everyday including laundry/dishwasher/wipe counters/make beds. and then have a list of other cleaning to do like go through closets, organizing xyz, all that crap I never have time for). So I just power through my list and add items to it as I think of things to do.

I also got very bored until I started the list. Part of me gets annoyed I have to wear her the whole day (she won't nap on her own usually) to get stuff done, but I have come to terms with it:) now the days go by much faster and I am feeling super productive!! Plus I feel like I get some awesome exercise.

Lastly I went through my calendar for the next few months for birthdays, anniversaries, etc and went shopping for cards and gifts now so it's done when I go back to work and they are already filled out and wrapped for later (all done while baby wearing!)

I do get out and NIP which helps too, hopefully you can get comfy with it, or just bring your boppy and nurse in the car between stores...I do that a lot on days I have a lot of errands!

  • @smdukes‌ - wow, you are super productive! I love the list idea and the gift idea, I may have to do the same! It would be nice to get some things done other than "taking care of the baby".

Don't let my post fool you, many days I only get one of those done but it at least gives me ideas and a goal of how to get through the day:) but thanks!

  • I agree with PP about trying to get out more. Start small with NIP and pick kid friendly places to practice, like a park. Also, you could look up your local chapter of LLL and join the meetings. It will get you out of the house and with women who are all breastfeeding, so it can help you gain confidence NIP in a safe place. I plan on doing the same.

I like the idea of creating a list of tasks to work on during your short breaks at home too. It might make you feel more productive and help maintain some semblance of "normal life".

Bottom line, you're doing a great job! But try to find some time for yourself every day so you don't lose your mind!

All AL-ers welcome in my posts! <3
  • I'm hesitant to NIP and have been starting by nursing around my good friends. I still use a blanket and it's been helpful getting used to someone besides DH being around. One was at baby's birth (which I hadn't planned on but in the throws of labor, who cares who sees what) so she saw it all anyway. Next ill prob nurse in front of my mom and other girlfriends. I think I'm more worried about my spraying milk causing a mess than the actual act of NIP.
