Question for moms of kids who take Claritin

Or any other OTC allergy medication.

Do any of you know of any allergy med for little kids that has no flavoring at all?

N has to take daily allergy meds now and she absolutely hates any medicine with fruit flavoring but all the medications designed for kids under 6 have fruit flavoring.

I asked the pharmacist at Target yesterday and she said the only ones they carried that were unsweetened were for kids 6 and older.

  • We are on Singular 5mg.  Its the only one that is covered by an Rx and not OTC.  I'm cheap like that.  Anyway, despite DD being 8, it is chewable and I think flavored.

  • Ours are dye free but have a grapey flavor. They are on Zyrtec and a singulair chewtab.
This is the one we're using right now, except Claritin.

She put it in her mouth last night and started gagging.  We gave her some milk to wash it down with, but she gagged for, like, a good 10 minutes longer, even though she'd already chewed it up and swallowed it.

I have cvs brand generic Zyrtec, it says it's dye free and sugar free and nothing about flavor so I'm assuming it does not have added flavor. My kids take it no problem. It also doesn't smell fruity.
My DD takes this too.  The one she takes does have a flavor, but it isn't berry.  It's almost like cotton candy ish.  She has always taken it without complaint, where she would fight other OTC meds with flavoring.

  • DS is the same, and I can't find unflavored. I put it IN the milk. I know that's not ideal, but he drinks the whole thing with no issue. Could she do a chewable?
    She's doing chewable now.

We tried to put it in her milk, but the liquid version we had was so strong that it made the milk taste like bubble gum.

She screamed for a good hour about that.

    Like legit screamed.

chocolate milk? Would that hide the taste better? Or in a couple ounces of juice?
She hates chocolate milk and juice.

    She is an odd duck.

  • She really is.  She also dislikes cake, cookies, and anything sweet except Oreos.

It barely has a flavor. I think it's probably the best option but I think your girls might be too young for it @CinemaGoddess

Does Claritin still make the dissolvable Redi-tabs? I have no idea if they're on the market anymore, since it's what I was given when I was a kid (and Claritin was still prescription, not OTC yet). From what I remember they tasted a little minty.
They do for adults but not sure for kids. Those would be perfect for actually.
  • All kids like stuff that melts on their tongue.

DS2 takes the chewable Claritin. I don't know of any allergy meds that aren't flavored for younger kids.

Can you use a plastic syringe and shoot the liquid into the back of her throat while she plugs her nose?

I know peanut butter removes the toothpaste taste from the mouth. I wonder if it'd work with the chewable. I'll tell DS2 that it's a science experiment tomorrow and feed him a Tb of chunky with his Claritin crushed up. I'll report back with 1-5 stars on the level of grossness.

  • 4/5 stars. DS2 said he could only taste it a little. It was mostly peanut butter flavor. I hope it works for her. Just realize that you are putting your DD's taste buds in the hands of a 5 year old's opinion;)
