Help me with my presentation!

June is Hip Dysplasia awareness month. It is kind of my personal crusade. Many people only know about dysplasia in dogs. Not much is known about the cause, or the best course of treatment for humans. I was dx'd with dysplasia when I was two months old, spent two weeks in traction, 5 months in a body cast, and a year in a body brace. My hip socket is still not formed completely. My daughter was dx'd at two weeks old (because I was INSISTANT on an immediate appt with a specialist after her hip click at birth).

Any way- because this is my pet cause, I have been asked to give a presentation to a local mother's group on hip healthy swaddling/baby wearing, and general awareness.

I have handouts for all of this, and I'm also planning on discussing patient/parent rights in terms of access to providers. If you were coming to this presentation, what would you be most interested in hearing about? What questions would you have?

Thanks ladies! TL;DR- whadda wanna know about hip dysplasia in humans?

Re: Help me with my presentation!

  • I'm embarrassed to say I had only heard of it in dogs.

I would be interested in general info. What causes it? What are the signs? All that type stuff.

Good for you for doing this!

  • I would like to know about the baby wearing, specifically good types of carriers and bad ones. I am somewhat familiar so more general signs and symptoms would be a good starting point.
  • Signs and symptoms. Prevention/precaution (especially in preemies who are more predisposed). As a peds ortho nurse, I'm happy to see this!

Statistics? What are the incident rates?

How can the general public help raise awareness, help families dealing with it?

How do physicians diagnose it? It's part of the well baby exam, right?

    Preventive measures?

You're awesome for making this your cause! Hope you do great in your presentation!

@nesenotes- Does she post of SAHM? Or did she about a year and a half ago? If so, I actually remember when her daughter had surgery!

  • @MaineMama‌ I'm not sure. I think she normally sticks to J12. But her daughter did have the surgery about a year ago and may have a follow up surgery again in the next couple if months.

  • I would also want to know about what impact it had on you growing up and what, if any, issues you still have.

  • I think it is wonderful that you are doing this! I had mild hip dysplasia (unknown whether I was born with it or it was caused by swaddling or a carrier). Since it was not commonly checked for or diagnosed when I was a baby, I had it into my late teens and early twenties. It eventually caused enough significant dysfunction in my ability to walk the in had to take a LOA from college and have corrective surgery.

That said, I'm still rather uneducated about it as it affects infants. If I were attending the presentation I would hope to learn about much of what others have already suggested...
    Heredity vs. other causes
    Symptoms and risk factors
    Prevention
    Importance of early detection
    Courses of action once discovered

I hope you'll share your presentation on here when it is done! Good luck :)

  • I would be interested in ways of swaddling and baby wearing that are healthy for baby's hips. I didn't know you could potentially cause problems by either. I would also love to see the handouts you have on hand if you wouldn't min sharing!
  • All of my handouts have come from This website :) If anyone else is interested in handing them out, they will send you them for free! They have some great recourses!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far! I really am excited to do this talk and increase awareness!
