Didn't see that coming... (possible pre-e)

So Wednesday at my appointment, my OB told me that my bp has risen slightly over the last two appointments.  It's not high enough to be concerning, but given that I have 2 risk factors for PIH and pre-eclampsia (BMI and AMA), she wanted to err on the side of caution and run more tests (my urine has always been negative for protein).  They drew some blood and sent me home with a kit to do a 24-hour urine collection on Tuesday (I know, I know, you're jealous).  Well, today the nurse called to say that my blood work was "slightly abnormal" and they are concerned that it could be pre-e.  Given that my bp isn't terrible and the bw was only a bit abnormal, they said they are comfortable waiting until next week to re-test my blood and test the 24-hour urine sample.  So I was given instructions to watch out for certain symptoms, call ASAP if I have any, and otherwise...wait.  The only cure for pre-eclampsia is delivery, so if I do have it, we will be meeting Mr. Baby sooner rather than later.  He will be 37w on Sunday so there really isn't any risk in delivering him, whereas there would be a risk to both of us if he stayed in.

I am not that nervous about the pre-e itself -- I know what to look for and live 20 minutes from our excellent hospital and feel lucky that I don't have to be worried about a pre-term delivery if it comes to that.  I am however super anxious about the prospect of having a baby sooner rather than later!  I think I'd probably feel the same if I was 41-42w, but whoa, now that it seems like it could be close, I am a little freaked out!  Our house is a mess, our crib is still only half-assembled, and I am NOT READY!

Of course, after all this it is quite possible that they will run my tests on Wednesday and decide I don't have pre-e and I will be sent on my way to wait for another 3-4 weeks.  Who knows!  It's been a weird, surreal afternoon though and I am self-medicating with ice cream.

Thanks!  We are actually signed up for an infant CPR/safety class tomorrow morning.  I'd kind of rather stay home and do baby prep but we can't get our money back unless I get a doctor's note indicating I couldn't attend.  And then we have a family dinner to go to at night...but we're hoping to squeeze as much baby prep as we can into the afternoon.

  • Glad you are this far along when this was (possibly) uncovered! Hope all is well and you can get a little more time to prep, though. Will be thinking about you. So happy that you are finally about to meet your son!

  • What a bummer, and I hope your Tuesday Pee Fest yields good results and it just turns out you had some borderline levels...that said, I'm also glad you are being so closely monitored! We all know about Sybil on Downton Abbey. We'll have none of that.

As for being ready...you'll be fine. You have boobs, shelter, diapers, some blankets, and I'm sure a soft/safe place to put the baby outside of your unassembled crib. Mr. Baby will be just fine. But, as you said, luck will have it that you go a week past dates :).

p.s. @KH826 your last sentence make me LOL!!!

  • Oh @ball.and.chain - yikes, how crazy!!! I'd be eating ice cream too (ok I might have some in you honor ;-)  Well I hope everything turns out alright next week. But if it doesn't and you'll be meeting Mr. Baby sooner rather than later than I have to agree with PP, you have all you need and will probably use in the first few days already at your disposal ;-)

Have a great weekend and keep us posted.
  • Thanks everyone...so far, so good.  Hoping things stay quiet here for a little while.

  • Hope everything goes well for you guys FX
  • I'm glad you are in the safe zone if action is needed!!! Yes, mr baby is in good hands and believe me you don't need that crib yet!
Well the good news is that S finished the crib last night.  Which yes, he doesn't actually need yet, but it does give us a place to put the crib mattress and bedding so that they are not all hanging out in our living room.  :)  Anything that gets us a little more organized is good in my book.

Today I'm trying to focus on my hospital bag since that is DEFINITELY not ready to go (and kind of important).

Ahhh, the 24 hour pee test.  Have fun with that one!  FTR, my BP jumped like whoa for 1 visit and I went through this exercise as well.  I'm hoping for you that your experience turns out the same way mine did - No Pre-E (and no explaination)!  Then again, I ended up going 10 days past my due date so maybe that isn't the greatest deal for you either.  ;)

Glad to hear you made some progress this weekend, and that it will give you more peace of mind.  Bag/shmag.  In my experience you're never "Ready" but you're definitely ready.  You'll be great, S will be great, baby will be awesome!
