Stroller Question for second time moms

I got a hand-me-down stroller when I was pregnant with DD1 and I hate it.  Now that I am expecting DD2 I want to buy a new stroller but have no idea what to buy.  I am not asking specifically for brand recommendations (although I wouldn't mind!) but rather a style.  DD1 will be just shy of 3 when DD2 is born and I am not sure how much 3 year olds ride in strollers.  Can't decide if I should go with a side-by-side double stroller so both can ride together and I can use the infant carseat/carrier on the one side if I want for a while (like the idea of 2 full size seats) or should I got with a tandem stroller. I even thought of a single stroller with the glider board so DD1 can just stand and ride if she gets tired of walking. I originally was all set to buy a tandem stroller until I started to do some research and have heard a lot of complaints about the seats not being full size seats and being uncomfortable for older kids, if that is the case then DD1 probably won't want to ever ride and I would have bought it for nothing,

Just wondering what you moms that have an older child are planning to do when baby #2 comes along (or #3, or #4...)?!?!

Re: Stroller Question for second time moms

  • I don't suggest a side by side if you plan to take it into stores.. it may to wide. We had a graco sit and stand it worked awesome. It came with two seats so my three year old could Sit as well but the "standing" part also had a little bench she could sit on.. I loved it!

I'm thinking about getting something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Joovy-Caboose-Tandem-Stroller-Appletree/dp/B001QFYPM2/ref=sr_1_6?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1403104161&sr=1-6&keywords=double+stroller
    Or this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KQ1C0HO?psc=1

I like this style because DD will be young enough (2.5) that I think she'll want to sit on longer walks, and side-by-side strollers are unwieldy.

This is the one I got last year when DS2 was born (DS1 was 3 and didn't ride much but liked the option for long days at the zoo or theme parks, etc).  Be warned though - the basket is a pain in the ass to get at and even harder if you have a more structured diaper bag.  My solution has been to have a Mommy Hook on the handle for a bag with the more often needed things (wipes, water, a snack, etc) and then use a more forgiving nylon bag with the rest of the stuff in the basket.

  • I have heard that tandem double strollers can be just as big of a pain to drive as side-by-side double strollers cause they are just as long as side-by-sides are wide.  I guess maybe a better tandem stroller might maneuver a little better.  So many choices!

  • I just recently got an ergobaby carrier so I do plan to wear baby a lot in the beginning but like everybody said, on those longer trips i want an option for DD1 to have a break from walking.  I almost hate to buy a big bulky stroller and only use the second seat so little but you have to do what you have to do.  Thanks for the suggestions!

  • I had a front and back tandom safety first double stroller and hated it it was ment for the older kid to be in front wich made stearing very difficult however the seats were roomy, I bought a side by side jogging stroller and I love it for my 4yr old and 2yr old, most stores are ok going thru but yes youwill his a spot or two you would just half to go around, hope this helps :)

Agreed. They are just as long so hard to turn. The city mini double is one of the narrowest double strollers out there. We have that. check it out.

  • When my second was born I thought I had to have a double side by side. I ended up hating it. It was terribly hard to manuever and my 2.5 year old ds couldn't keep his hands off the baby. It quickly was sitting in the garage covered in dust.
What worked best for me was one stroller + ergobaby carrier. I LOVE my uppa baby g-luxe. It is an umbrella stroller with a full recline and decent sized basket. It does not accomodate an infant carrier, but I was able to put my infant in it starting around 2.5 months with a few strategically rolled receiving blankets as props. At that time I would wear either child while the other one rode in the stroller. My 2.5 year old could also walk for short trips.

  • With my first child, I used a Chicco and found it bulky. It was a pain getting it in and out of the car. This time I have twins coming and plan to start with a Baby Trend Snap 'n Go. Not too sure about 3 year olds using strollers. Mine hasn't in awhile, but it's totally up to you.
