UTI questions :(

Hello ladies! I went on a super fun trip to Vegas last weekend- on the Saturday, I woke up from a nap and had a bit of pressure/crampyness when I peed, and then was peeing frequently. I thought something might be wrong, but at the same time the baby has been sitting really low and pushing on my bladder at times. I got those test strips from the pharmacy and tested negative for nitrates and "trace" for leukocytes. I took multiple tests with the same result. I asked the pharmacist about this, and he advised me to use cranberry and that the trace of leukocytes could be from anything. I got home Tuesday morning (I am Canadian, so I preferred to wait until I got back to my own healthcare system! My symptoms also got better/disappeared). So my midwife sent me to get my urine tested and it came back today inconclusive: negative for leukocytes and nitrates, but with possible bacteria- the lab queried a contamination and didn't say which type of bacteria. Anyways, my MW was supposed to send another requisition to the lab for me today to repeat the test, and I rushed to get there after work- no req. Now I need to wait until Monday. She said I could do it today or Monday anyways, so I'm trying not to worry. I'm just concerned about leaving a possible infection for this long (over a week now). Anyone know about dangers of this? I don't want to page my MW because it's not an emergency.

Honestly if you don't feel comfortable page her. She should have sent it and forgot. I never liked "bugging" my doctor either but she gave me her pager number after I had DS and I called about a UTI. (I'm Canadian too!) On the other hand, anytime I have had a UTI it is usually painful and does not subside. Keep up with the cranberry juice/pills!

  • Thanks @annejulie26. Unfortunately the lab in my town is closed for the weekend, so there isn't much point now anyways. I could go to a walk in tonight or tomorrow, but not sure if it's worth it to be around a bunch of sick people in a waiting room! I'm hoping that my symptomlessness is a good indication!

Some US physicians will prescribe antibiotics prophylactically if there is cause for concern with initial UA results and severe symptoms while they await follow-up results. From what you're describing it sounds like you may have a UTI and are asymptomatic?  The suspicion is based upon the trace bacteria of unknown origin in the sample? If this is true I'm not even really going to comment on your inquiry re: "dangers", since it is all suspect given the sample didn't show cause for concern.

If the lab is still open you can have them call your MW, or, if there are walk in clinics in Canada you can go to one of them and have them run the test, but you still likely will not have results until early next week.

Honestly, it sounds like your MW is not concerned, especially since she said you could go to the lab today or Monday.  Since she said that, I likely wouldn't page her since technically Monday was still acceptable to her and you are following her guidance.

You're probably already doing so, but if not drink tons of water! It's a pain because you'll be in the bathroom even more but it helps. I used to get frequent utis and if I was in pain I'd drink water constantly for about 2 hours and the pain would subside. Also, are you allowed to take Azo? Those really helped too with pain and urgency. Good luck!

  • I was just released yesterday from the hospital because I had been ignoring my UTI symptoms. I wound up with severe pyelonephritis, and had to be on IV antibiotics and pushed fluids. It was awful. You are not a pest by taking your own health seriously, and asking a question. I felt every bit the "drama queen" until I was writhing in kidney pain and had to be away from my 13 month old for my hospital stay. I won't be making that mistake again.

Also, considering your MW forgot to call in the order once, I would remind her at a time where she can actually call in the order/process the online request immediately rather than trust that she would remember to do it on Monday if reminded now.

  • When I had a uti, I was in terrible pain. It was unbearable and it kept getting worse.

UTIs need to be treated, so if you are concerned, you should call them and demand something get done quickly.

  • I would not stress too much since the dip was basically negative and you're asymptomatic. I used to work as an MA in a urology office. The number one thing they look for a dip is nits. Since that was negative I would not worry too much. The trace leukocytes could have been from your pee got contaminated when you urinated (impossible to avoid) the sample. I'm obviously not an expert but it sounds like they aren't worried. It's better to wait for conclusive results rather than start treating what could be nothing. I knew many patients who's PCP would treat them any time they were slightly symptomatic and not take urine cultures. Then later on the down the road when they truly were infected, their body would have built up an antibiotic resistance. Not good.

  • I had the fun experience of going to the ER last night. I was having sharp pains on my side. They tested my urine and found some bacteria and white blood cells. They gave me an antibiotic immediately. I had no other symptoms. The only possible symptom is that my urine comes out really slow, but I thought that was normal since the baby is squishing my bladder. I think you should continue to be proactive. UTIs are more serious for pregnant women, so if you do have one, you want your antibiotics ASAP.

  • Thanks for your responses ladies. I spoke to a friend who is a family doctor, and he said with my result, there is VERY little chance I have a UTI- similar to what @hazelrora said- no nitrates, no leukocytes, is a negative test. I still plan to get re-tested tomorrow to completely rule it out. I continue to have no symptoms. If I experience any, I would head straight to the ER. Thanks again for taking the time to answer me!

Good luck! I'd definitely want to rule it out. I was in the ER last night with an asymptomatic UTI, and that was no fun at all.

  • @mrsl2b, how did you know to go to the ER if it was asymptomatic?

@Sweetiepops I was there for a different reason. I was also still on pain meds when I typed the above response on Sunday, otherwise I probably would have been clearer! Sorry! I had a flare up of my gastroparesis, which caused severe upper abdominal pain. I think I meant that the whole ER experience was no fun.

  • I had a "backache" about a month ago which didn't feel any worse than a typical backache from a night of sleeping in a bad position. But it didn't go away. Finally on the third day I went to the doc because I thought it could be a kidney/bladder/UT infection. Which it was. So I got antibiotics and felt fine.

Right now I'm taking another round of antibiotics for another UTI. My back hurt a little bit and was just getting worse and my urine was cloudy (but I had no pain when I peed). But given how bad the first one was (I was pretty much useless for 4-5 days), I went to the doc straight away this time. So I've been fine mostly this time around. But it still sucks. I'm just hoping these aren't a sign of a larger kidney issue that Baby has caused.

Never had a UTI before pregnancy and I hope they stay away afterwards as well.

  • Thanks all! Found out today that my second urine was all clear! I feel fairly confident that if I did have a small infection, it's well rid out. Thank goodness for all natural cranberry! I may not have had anything to begin with, who knows!
