Protein in Urine

I had a routine check up yesterday, and they found a +1 trace of protein in my urine and my blood pressure was slightly elevated. I went for labs and have to do another urinalysis tomorrow. My biggest concern is, it could be early signs of pre-eclampsia :( My Mom had pre-ecplampsia with all 4 kids, and she actually lost my older sister at birth, so I am totally freaking out. Any one else have this happen??

Re: Protein in Urine

  • It is concerning but I think they can manage it if caught early. My SIL had pre-e and she made it it 37 weeks but was in bedrest after 30 weeks :(

How high was your BP? Lots of patients have trace protein, I wouldn't worry until your PET labs and spot urine come back.

Have they ordered a 24 hour urine test yet? That'd be another way to confirm kidney function issues.
They are having me come back tomorrow to do another urine test. My check up was yesterday.

    It was 131/75

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. I had HELLP and preeclampsia last time so I know they are scary things to go through. They haven't found protein in my urine but my LDH levels are running high and they asked me to check my blood pressure daily and monitor my symptoms. Best of luck and I hope everything works out for you.
  • I had protein in my urine at one of earlier appointments. They sent me to the lab for concern of an infection, but it turned it to be nothing. The doc didn't even mention the threat of pre-e. :-/

    Hope yours is nothing, too!

  • I had pregnancy induced hypertension with both of my pregnancies and was spilling protein but not enough that they switched me to pre-e. Both my daughter's came on their own and I was able to keep me blood pressure "down" (still high but not having to take meds high) with bed rest. There's a good chance it's not a big deal, keeping my fingers crossed for you!

That's not that high. But I hope the results come back in your favor!
  • I was the same way with my first pregnancy. I had to have NSTs 3 times a week and was monitored several times at L&D. They discovered that my blood pressure only raised when I was at appointments or up amd moving. I was put on bed rest with mild pre eclampsia and made it full term.
  • I don't have any experience but just wanted to offer my support. Hope everything turns out ok for you! I have a friend due in August and she's got elevated blood pressure and that fun stuff. She got put on bed rest until little boy gets here. So far so good!

Agreed, not too bad. I'm sure they are monitoring it and just taking all precautions given the trace (which as I said, a lot of people have).

Also, giving a urine sample isn't the same as a 24 hour urine. If you have high protein in your spot urine test today, they may consider your doing a 24 hour urine where you collect your urine at home in a jug for 24 hours and bring it back the next day. FYI

Like I said, I wouldn't worry too much until your results come back today. We have enough to worry about!

Good luck, and keep us updated!

Apparently its high for me, I am usually around 114/75.

  • Oh I'm sorry, this would stress me out too. I do remember at my first MW appointment they told me that it's common for pregnant women to have traces of both protein and glucose in urine.

Were you feeling anxious or anything at the doctor's? At my doctor's office, my BP is ALWAYS elevated (usually around 130/80 or so)! They wait 10 minutes and check it again, and it's normal. I think it's because I have to walk through a big parking lot and up some stairs, and it takes a bit of time for the BP to come down, and the nurses there make me a bit nervous haha! At the MW's, my BP is always low (around 110/60), and I swear it's because they're so nice and make me feel so good!

Also- I'm not a BP expert, but the "75" as your second number is definitely not high.

I'd also like to caveat that yes, there is a normal blood pressure range, but depending on a person's overall health and co-morbidities, change in blood pressure can be cause for concern.  I know people love to reassure each other that everything is okay and that things aren't high, or low, or whatnot, but even something as simple as blood pressure isn't always one size fits all.  This was a huge topic at a medical congress I attended last week, and even a room of physicians had different opinions on high vs. normal BP and potential interventions/next step when given a patient chart & complete medical history.

OP, I hope it turns out to be nothing!
