Car Ride Activities for 15 month old

I am driving about an hour every day to help take care of my parents health care needs.  LO is doing pretty well in the car but I wondered if anyone had suggestions of specific toys or activities that engaged their kids on car rides. We don't have a dvd player but he doesn't seem to be too interested in tv anyway and I'm not sure I want him having a lot of screen time yet.  I give him books & a pretzel or mum mum but that doesn't last long. Ideas?

  • I agree with music.  My in-laws live about 50 minutes away and we usually turn on their songs after a bit to keep them happy.  They love the song "Happy" by Pharell.  You can try rotating out some toys.  My kids like an electronic leap frog that plays ABC's and the Fisher Price Travel Doodler thing.

We do have a DVD player that we put in our car but we do not use it for trips of that length.  We have done it for trips over 3 hours.

My LOs commute with me every day. It's about a 45 minute ride each way. DD sometimes reads her books, but most of the time they listen to music or just look out the window.

  • we have "special" toys for vehicle rides. These toys only enter the house to be cleaned and then make their way right back outside! This way she looks forward to getting in the vehicle. Of course that means looking for toys that interest him/her, but wont cause a scene when you try and leave them in the vehicle
  • *lurker*  DS is in the car with me for a good 1.5 hours a day.  At first I gave him treats, but I found that then everytime we got in the car he wanted a snack!  I cut out that quickly.  Now I have dedicated toys and books for the car, sing songs, and talk to him about what we see while driving.

We don't do drives like that every day, more like once or twice a week round trip, but we don't do anything special. Like others I often time with naps, but that's not always possible. Let him enjoy the scenery. He doesn't need to be entertained by "something" the whole time, or even part of the time. My son loves to point out trucks, motorcycles, etc. Sometimes he holds onto a stuffed animal. We don't do food in the car, but I know I'm in the minority on that.

I also don't put on music for my kids. My older son will sing his songs anyway and the younger one sort of hums along with the same tune, but I enjoy my driving time too much and it's the only time I really listen to "my" music anymore.
