3rd Trimester

Do you know your blood type? Warning, scary post.

I don't, and I'm watching some baby show on Discovery Health and the lady started hemmorhaging (sp?) and lost 1 liter of blood after delivery....they asked the film crew to leave.

How would I go about finding that out? Guess I should have asked them to check that out when I had the glucose test the other day. It's probably not normal NOT to know. How about you?

  • umm...your dr should check to make sure you are not rh negative.
  • In all your initial pregnancy blood work, they surely checked your blood type...in case you are a negative blood type and need rhogam shots. They have it in your charts I'm sure. Just ask your Dr.

  • Your doc will have it in your records. I usually carry all of my info on a card in my wallet. I also have my due date, my OBs # and my emergency contacts in my wallet in case I pass out or am in an accident or anything.

  • Is rh something they would have already checked? Do you think my blood type is in my records somewhere?
  • They know my blood type from all the bloodwork I had done at the beginning - I sadly - do not remember.
  • You should have had it checked at the beginning of your pregnancy - it's routine for them to check your blood type along with RH factor.  Your OB should have it on file.

  • I could be totally wrong here but I believe your OB would know, unless they didn't do ANY bloodwork on you.

My OB knows mine b/c they need to know if I would've needed the Rhogam (sp) shots.

  • They tested your blood type in first tri and mine also retested when I checked into L&D. Just ask your OB. But honestly, if you are losing blood, they won't be asking you "hey maam, what blood type are you so I can run and get some".... they'd give you the universal O if they don't have time or record of what you need.
  • It should be in your charts. And, they should take your blood at the hospital just to double check. Whenever I've had surgery even though I tell them, or it's in my records, they always take blood and check again.
  • They told me my blood type after they did my first round of blood work. I am Rh - so maybe that is why they told me. Anyway, it should be in your chart. I'm sure if you ask at your next OB appointment they will be able to tell you.

  • Your doc will have it in your records. I usually carry all of my info on a card in my wallet. I also have my due date, my OBs # and my emergency contacts in my wallet in case I pass out or am in an accident or anything.
That is a really good idea. I have something on my phone for "emergency contacts" and it's the first number that pops up in my phone book. It also has a thing that says "notes" and I put my EDD there.

Not like I'm going anywhere anymore but still a good thing to know.
  • I'm sure they know. They have to determine that from the beginning in case you have a negative RH. Call them and ask them to  look in your file so that you have that information.

Yes it would have to be considering how many tests they do with your blood during pg.  Ask your doctor.

  • At my very first blood draw, that is one thing that they tested for. Surgeons usually never go into surgery with out knowing this. It should always be in your file as well.

  • You can ask your OB they will tell you your blood type. They check that with your initial blood work
  • I'm O Negative..  Your dr. should know.. they should have tested you at the very begining of all this.
  • i am B negative.  i share no blood factors with the Rhesus Monkey
  • Just ask your OB. If anything would happen and they don't know your blood type they just give you O neg which is good for any blood type.

Yep, would have been in your first round of tests.

I'm O Pos. I probably should have it in my ID stuff somewhere, I guess.

  • Yup.  I've donated blood for years so I know what my blood type is.  :)  DH also is a donor so he knows what his blood type is as well.
  • me, my exhubs and kids all have the same bloodtype. just ask your dr. they have it.
  • I'm AB+ so I can take anything, which makes me worry that if I ever need a transfusion that they are going to give me blood that is about to expire because I can use anything.

  • Yea - they should have it on file at the doc office.  And ditto to Mrs.L's post....
  • I'm sure your doctor knows and checked, especially because they need to know about Rh.  With that said, you should know.  I give blood, so I have a red cross card I carry in my wallet with my blood type.

  • It's one of the tests in the first series of blood work they do when you first get pregnant, just ask to see your chart.
  • usually you are tested during the first trimester for your blood type. Ask your doc.  I am O positive.
  • I know mine.. A+

They would have checked your blood type when they did the initial blood wook at the beginning of your pregnancy.  You should be able to just ask your doctor.

  • Your OB will know it It's one of the tings they test for with all those vials of blood. No worries, I didn't know what I was until our first Daughter. And they only mentioned it casually.
  • I was just wondering this the other day. My mom memorized all 4 of her kids blood type. I should ask her.
  • Since you had to have blood drawn at your OB visit, I am sure you can ask them about that.  It's in your chart.
  • I'm sure your doctor knows. They must have checked it during your first blood screenings bec. they have to check if you are RH Negative and if you were you would have already had a Rhogam shot by now.

  • I  know my blood type because I donate blood, but surely with all the bloodwork they do for a pregnancy they have all ready determined that.
  • It should be noted on your file.  I know when I was pregnant with my daughter my OB at the time would remind me everytime and then ask me later on to see if I remembered.  I'm A-.  Ask at your next visit or call them and tell them you want to know.
  • I am B+ and I only know this because I usually donate blood every 8 - 10 weeks, before the pregnancy or course, and it's on my Red Cross card
