To call the RE or not to call the RE

Questions for all you more season veterans:
We are 9DPO and I am not feeling very confident about this cycle. I want to call the RE and get a plan for the next cycle and discuss if we are going to move to injectables and if so what medication so I can research local pharmacy's that have them and so on. Well DH(bless him) thinks we should wait because at 12 day follicle measurement and trigger shot the RE said to call after a +HPT or when I get AF. I think I mentioned before that I think the RE is way too passive so I am not sure how to proceed. DH and I agreed we would do IUI until my birthday (August) and then go to IVF if we don't get a BFP by then.

Q1) Should I call the RE and just ask what the process would be?
Q2) Should I make an appointment to see the RE to talk over the plan on how to proceed for the next few months
or
Q3) Wait until I AF shows up and go from there?

Me: 32  DH:34

Re: To call the RE or not to call the RE

  • I'd say 1 or 2.  My RE always said to call after 15pdo, but they nurses always said it would be good to set up a meeting with the RE just in case.  If I was to wait until AF, there were months that by the time I'd be able to talk to him, it would be too late to do much that cycle.  I could always cancel if I later didn't feel a meeting was needed.

If you DH prefers the waiting, maybe just do option one, so it doesn't feel like you are totally going against the game plan.

    Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility
    IUI's 1-3 = BFN, IVF converted to IUI 4/13 = BFN
    IVF 1.2: 8R 6M 4F -- 2 blastocysts frozen, FET 8/15 = BFP!!
    Beta #s = 445;1,098; 9,545  -- EDD 5/2 -- Team Pink!
    Camila Josephine arrived 4/30 :)

  • In general, I don't think there is anything wrong with scheduling an appointment before you know the outcome of a cycle. Last cycle I had an appointment scheduled to discuss next steps (if needed) at 10dpiui.

However, usually (not always) people will try the same thing for 2-3 cycles before moving onto something else. Is there a reason you want to move onto injects? (There could be a perfectly good reason, I'm just trying to make sure I understand.)

Also, I don't know about your doctor, but I normally have to wait 2-3 weeks for an appointment, so unless you can get in in the next couple of days, you might be stuck with your current plan for a cycle.
    **siggy warning**  **everyone welcome**

  • I always just waiting until the BFN. My Dr already had a plan if my cycle didn't work already lined out. So when I'd call the nurse would tell me what my plan was for the next month if we wanted to try so I knew where I was headed before I even started my period. The nurse would also ask if I wanted to talk to him. My Dr always made a point to talk to me within a few days if I needed an appt.

I'd call and just ask how they handle things if there a BFN.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • @lebradford
We are thinking on moving on quicker because I didn't respond well to the Femara, only one egg which is what I have always had so she mentioned switching to injects to try and get more eggs.
I think I might compromise and wait until Monday and call the RE nurse.

  • Agreed. Make the appointment.  If you need info, go and get it.  I'm sometimes hesitant to call the doc but during this crazy process it is best to get all of the info you need whenever you need it.
