I have a front loader and it smells mildly of mold all the time. I hear this is the norm for front loaders. I think the appeal is going back to top loaders but ones that are high efficiency bc they dry out better and leave no mold smell. I try cleaning my front loader often but smell is always mildly there. I won't buy a front loader again.
We have Samsung top loading and love it! We got them a little over a year ago.
This. I was actually glad that they buyers of our home wanted to keep our fancy front loaders. The front loaders may have improved some, but if you do a quick search you will find a lot of people who are unhappy with theirs.
I chose a HE top loader instead of a front loader because of the smell issue that my friends complained about. I live in a hot, humid climate, and my laundry area is in the traffic path by the back door so I couldn't leave the washing machine door open.

We have a high efficiency top loader as well. My mom, who has front loaders, prefers the top loader and I like not having to worry about mold. We got the Bravos XL washer and dryer. It's a huge capacity without the agitator and we love them!
Honestly, I didn't think I'd like it because we had a nice, new front loader at our rental, but I really like it. We've never had the mold issue and our does a good job of spinning the water out. The only thing I wish I could change is that there is no timer option (like if you want to set the timer to wash clothes at a certain time without having to manually start it)
We have an LG HE TL and matching dryer. The capacity is huge, and I like that there's no agitator. We cloth diaper so the extra water (compared to HE front loaders) is nice. The transmission on the washer failed earlier this year after less than four years of ownership. Extended warranty covered the repair at least, but between that and a major recall I'm skeptical of the LG brand in the future.
@kikimeemee do you leave the door to the washer open? We never close ours and have never had an issue with mold.
we leave our washer door open to in order to avoid mold issues.
Yes, I've left the door open since the very beginning as a friend of mine said this to me immediately after my washer was installed. It sits open about 6 inches and I still have the musty, mildew-y smell. :-<
My laundry room is very spacious and clean (only hubby and me at home) so I really can't think of anything else causing the smell. Also, I read the instruction manual cover to cover when I got my Whirlpool Duet (2011) so I know I am using it properly. Maybe some models are smellier than others. ?
