Maternity Clothes

Another post by me, sorry, but on a side note from my other one about struggling with body image, does anyone have any suggestions about what sort of maternity clothes are the most ideal? What shirts do you find most flattering and is it worth it to buy maternity jeans? Any opinions would help, I bought two babydoll tops and a pair a dark jeans the other day, because it's all I could afford, but I was thinking of going to a second hand store or shopping in bigger sizes in a cheaper department. I'm just wanting to know what styles I should look for.

Re: Maternity Clothes

  • @kyliedaniellexx‌ @Nicb13 Thanks you two. So I guess leggings is a good investment. I have a pair of those, but I should probably get a bigger pair. Most of my pregnancy weight has gone to my ass so far, and I want to draw as little attention to it as possible so I'll probably buy some longer shirts and tank tops like you said. I'm not a huge fan of dresses, but I may consider a maxi dress or two to wear around the house on really hot days or if I feel to lazy to get dressed. It's summer, and wearing less will help me not feel as big, I suppose, yeah? I have a Target close to where I live, maybe I'll go there sometime and check some of the larger sizes. Thanks so much for the advice.

  • I found some great leggings at Walmart for $5. Also anything high waist and stretchy is great. Maxi dresses are wonderful, they grow with you, and you can wear them post baby until you're back into regular sizes. I do have a few favorite maternity tops, and a pair of white capris that I got at goodwill for $3 each.

I do know a few girls who didn't have to wear maternity jeans, but my butt gets huge while pregnant so stretchy maternity jeans make me feel like I look better.

  • I find maternity clothing stores assume all women who get pregnant are business women in their late 30s for some reason, and I don't find any of their clothing very flattering on a 20 year old like me. Also I'm very tall with a tight budget so I just have been shopping around for looser fitting clothing and like everyone else, leggings with a little give in them. I like some maternity tops though, I found a couple cute ones at a maternity store where I live, and I'm glad I got them. Other than that, I think I won't spend too much time or money on these things since I won't be wearing them for very long.

  • Leggings.  I live in leggings.  They're comfortable, not too hot and they grow with me.  Get some - you'll be incredibly happy you did.

  • I bought a bunch of tank tops from old navy, they're long and stretchy, plus I'll be able to wear them next summer too when I'm not pregnant. They're kind of tight but absolutely rock the bump so I love them! I've bought 2 pairs of maternity capris and a pair of maternity shorts for when I'm out of the house. Since I'm a teacher and currently on summer, I've just been wearing athletic/stretchy jersey material shorts while I'm at home.

  • Maxi skirts and Target Merona favorite T's have been my go to. I didn't buy those shirts before, because they are long and I am short. But now, they are perfect! They stretch well and come in all sorts of colors.

Maxi skirts/dresses are great because like PP said you don't have to buy maternity. I've also been looking for dresses that have a higher waist and have been wearing them with leggings.

  • I have been trying to put off maternity shopping... but it's gotten hard bc I've popped early!!  I have a friend's pool party this weekend & finally had to get SOMETHING (namely a swim suit!!)  I had gotten this advice from a friend that worked good for me:

Old Navy!  They have super cheap prices, but she warned me IN STORE the maternity stuff is crap quality & super cheap looking.. ONLINE it's much better. What I did was ordered a swim suit, a pair of shorts & 4 tops... all under $120!!  I shopped by looking thru a lot of the reviews, that was REALLY helpful. Women did a great job to sharing their experience with the clothes as far as 'too big' or 'doesn't stretch' etc & other said stuff like 'order down a size bc overall fit was baggy'.. I found it helpful & everything I ordered looked great & was of good quality!

    Good luck!!

I also tried on clothes in-store to get my size and then ordered it all online. Was able to get 4 tops and 4 pairs of pants for $126 (free shipping AND got $40 old navy cash back!).

Will also be looking at Target for some of the suggestions I saw posted.

    I love a good bargain!

  • I bought 2 pairs of maternity capris and a pair of maternity shorts plus some tops (all of the shirts are from Old Navy). The bottoms I got from Kohl's - they are a brand of Motherhood Maternity but were 50% off plus I had a 20% off coupon. I also got a swimsuit as my other one didn't fit. I got a pair of yoga pants and leggings, too. I found that non-maternity maxi dresses and skirts are great, also. I, too, didn't want to spend a bunch - and if I need anything else as the seasons change, I'll probably go to a local secondhand children's store that also sells maternity.

I had to get maternity bottoms pretty quickly because I was uncomfortable and couldn't breathe well. I had a belly band, but it didn't seem to work for too long (could have been because I was already between sizes). So I think it depends on your body and what makes you feel lovely :)

I love bella bands - they let you wear your pre-pregnancy pants open (keeping them on and covering it up). I wore my prepregnancy pants with a bella band right up to delivery with my first.
  • I buy my maternity clothes mostly from Kohl's, old navy and Macy's. I like leggings, but also the maternity capris. I found I can wear the maternity tops with my prepregnancy jeans. I also like Jessica Simpsons maternity jeans. I got those from Macy's. They had a pretty good selection. I can still wear prepregnancy maxi dresses and skirts, too.
  • I've got 2 pairs of maternity leggings, and I find them irreplaceable... They are great under shorter dresses, tunic tops, or just really long tank tops when I'm home for the day.  I've only got 3 actual maternity bottoms, one jean skirt, one set of khaki capris, and one set of jean capris.  I got 2 of those at goodwill.  I've also picked up about 10 maternity shirts, but they are all very basic and can be layered with my existing sweaters to look different.  I have honestly really embraced maxi dresses and skirts, they are comfy, they grow with me, and I will be able to wear them post baby for however long I want.  I strongly encourage hitting up the thrift shops regularly. The right outfit can really make you feel good. I've done a lot of shopping at thrift stores, Burlington coat factory, and old navy.

  • I've been living in maxi dresses! While some of mine are maternity, I have found that several of the ones I wore pre-pregnancy are still working well for me at nearly 27 weeks. I would recommend trying out what's already in your closet and seeing how it works with your bump before spending a ton of money on maxi dresses. You may be surprised at how many of your clothes will still work pretty far into the pregnancy.

I did invest in a couple of pairs of maternity pants and shorts, and I have to say they are nice to have for when I'm sick of wearing dresses. After all, just because you're pregnant doesn't mean that you don't want some variety in your wardrobe. I'm sure it all just depends on personal preference, but I really like the Gap maternity bottoms that I have purchased. I was not a fan of the band on any of the Old Navy shorts/pants that I tried on. Gap's bottoms are a little pricey, but they run 40% off promotions all the time. I just waited for those sales both times when I bought my pairs.

It's funny how everyone is so different… I personally hated the Bella Band and felt like it was a waste of money. I bought one and have used it two times. It just wasn't comfortable for me.

The Liz Lange Maternity basic tank tops from Target are one investment I'm glad I have made. They are really long, so I don't have to worry about them riding up on my tummy. They are regular $12.99 but I bought them on sale for only eight bucks each. Perfect for this hot weather we've been having!
  • Oh, and as for second-hand stores… definitely check them out! Unfortunately, the thrift and consignment shops where I live didn't have much in the way of maternity clothes, but I have a pregnant friend who lives in another state who has purchased so much cute stuff second-hand. It's worth a look if you're on a budget!
