Cramping after exam - how long did it last?

Apologies if this has already been posted (tried searching but didn't go back pages and pages)...

Just had my first cervical exam today at 36 weeks and am having lots of cramping and spotting (I know that both are normal). How long did the cramping last if this happens/happened to you, and did any of you feel like labor was triggered from an exam in a previous pregnancy? I feel like my doctor had his whole forearm up in my business and am now walking around like a tired cowboy.

Re: Cramping after exam - how long did it last?

  • I had an exam on Tuesday at my 38 week checkup and I definitely had severe cramping basically the whole second half of the day. I just took it easy on the couch and drank a lot of water and I was better by the next morning. It was certainly painful though, and not what I was expecting from a cervical exam!

  • Oh sorry! I know how that feels. I don't remember how long it lasted last time. Just take it easy. Call them in the morning. Sometimes it does feel a bit to rough.

  • It should be gone by the next day. But yes, I get very achy and have lots of contractions after an exam. Just try and relax.

  • I had cramps all day, and some spotting after my exam, I was super scared that I was going to go into labor. I also found taking it easy and drinking water to help, or at least it made me feel like I was doing something to calm things down, and by the next day I was feeling much better. Still, I am considering asking to skip the cervix check at my next appointment. I'm torn, because I do want to know how my dervix is progressing towards labor, but O dint want to do anything that could speed things up at this early of a point. I am at least going to mention how uncomfortable I was after the first check.

This maybe TMI, but does anyone remember after the stripping of the membranes that there was like a foul or bloody strong smell? :-/

  • Thanks guys :)

The cramping is already easing up a bit, but man, I was NOT expecting it to be like that! For some reason I thought it would be similar to a pap smear lol Yeahhhh, no.

  • I hardly noticed my first cervical check but after my second (Wednesday) I had bad cramping for almost 24hrs and I'm still spotting a little (Friday) but it's clearly brown not pink (sorry if TMI).

  • I'm almost 24 hours after the exam and had a terrible night of cramping and BHC. Spotting has basically disappeared. This is definitely the most miserable I've felt. Here's hoping it improves or becomes the real deal....this in between stuff is not fun!

  • I'm glad someone asked this, I have my first exam next Friday at 37wks and I definitely would not have expected cramping/spotting going into it.
You won't necessarily get any. I've had 2, @36 weeks and @38 weeks and I didn't spot or cramp after either, fwiw.
I just got back from my 1st exam and have no cramps or spotting!  Sounds like is pretty doctor dependent!  My Doc is super gentle...good for me ;)  Maybe it will be more uncomfortable when my cervix is open?

  • I've had 3 cervical exams so far (& Im only 34 weeks) & no cramping yet. I told my Dr. I was having a lot of pressure a few weeks ago, so he moved me to weekly visits and to check my cervix. Is it normal to not cramp too? Will that happen more towards the end of the pregnancy with the exams?

  • I'm wondering if my preterm labor symptoms (started at 33 weeks) put me at higher risk of reacting this way to the exam. My doctor was being super gentle (from what I could tell) and he's never rough, so I am wondering if I was just extra sensitive since I was already showing symptoms and was dilated.

  • I had cramping the entire next day after my late afternoon exam. I ended up taking the next day off work because it was so distracting and tylenol wasn't making it better. My OB suggested I stay off my feet and drink extra water. I'm sure this isn't normal for most people, mine was just "extra fun."
